Eclesiastes 7

1Melhor é a boa fama do que o melhor ungüento, e o dia da morte do que o dia do nascimento de alguém.

1A good name {is} better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

2Melhor é ir à casa onde há luto do que ir à casa onde há banquete, porque naquela está o fim de todos os homens, e os vivos o aplicam ao seu coração.

2{It is} better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that {is} the end of all men; and the living will lay {it} to his heart.

3Melhor é a mágoa do que o riso, porque com a tristeza do rosto se faz melhor o coração.

3Sorrow {is} better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. {Sorrow: or, Anger}

4O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, mas o coração dos tolos na casa da alegria.

4The heart of the wise {is} in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools {is} in the house of mirth.

5Melhor é ouvir a repreensão do sábio, do que ouvir alguém a canção do tolo.

5{It is} better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

6Porque qual o crepitar dos espinhos debaixo de uma panela, tal é o riso do tolo; também isto é vaidade.

6For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so {is} the laughter of the fool: this also {is} vanity. {crackling: Heb. sound}

7Verdadeiramente que a opressão faria endoidecer até ao sábio, e o suborno corrompe o coração.

7Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

8Melhor é o fim das coisas do que o princípio delas; melhor é o paciente de espírito do que o altivo de espírito.

8Better {is} the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: {and} the patient in spirit {is} better than the proud in spirit.

9Não te apresses no teu espírito a irar-te, porque a ira repousa no íntimo dos tolos.

9Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

10Nunca digas: Por que foram os dias passados melhores do que estes? Porque não provém da sabedoria esta pergunta.

10Say not thou, What is {the cause} that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this. {wisely: Heb. out of wisdom}

11Tão boa é a sabedoria como a herança, e dela tiram proveito os que vêem o sol.

11Wisdom {is} good with an inheritance: and {by it there is} profit to them that see the sun. {good...: or, as good as an inheritance, yea, better too}

12Porque a sabedoria serve de defesa, como de defesa serve o dinheiro; mas a excelência do conhecimento é que a sabedoria dá vida ao seu possuidor.

12For wisdom {is} a defence, {and} money {is} a defence: but the excellency of knowledge {is, that} wisdom giveth life to them that have it. {defence: Heb. shadow}

13Atenta para a obra de Deus; porque quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez torto?

13Consider the work of God: for who can make {that} straight, which he hath made crooked?

14No dia da prosperidade goza do bem, mas no dia da adversidade considera; porque também Deus fez a este em oposição àquele, para que o homem nada descubra do que há de vir depois dele.

14In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him. {set: Heb. made}

15Tudo isto vi nos dias da minha vaidade: há justo que perece na sua justiça, e há ímpio que prolonga os seus dias na sua maldade.

15All {things} have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just {man} that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked {man} that prolongeth {his life} in his wickedness.

16Não sejas demasiadamente justo, nem demasiadamente sábio; por que te destruirias a ti mesmo?

16Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself? {destroy...: Heb. be desolate?}

17Não sejas demasiadamente ímpio, nem sejas louco; por que morrerias fora de teu tempo?

17Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time? {before...: Heb. not in thy time?}

18Bom é que retenhas isto, e também daquilo não retires a tua mão; porque quem teme a Deus escapa de tudo isso.

18{It is} good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

19A sabedoria fortalece ao sábio, mais do que dez poderosos que haja na cidade.

19Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty {men} which are in the city.

20Na verdade que não há homem justo sobre a terra, que faça o bem, e nunca peque.

20For {there is} not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

21Tampouco apliques o teu coração a todas as palavras que se disserem, para que não venhas a ouvir o teu servo amaldiçoar-te.

21Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee: {take...: Heb. give not thine heart}

22Porque o teu coração também já confessou que muitas vezes tu amaldiçoaste a outros.

22For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

23Tudo isto provei-o pela sabedoria; eu disse: Sabedoria adquirirei; mas ela ainda estava longe de mim.

23All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it {was} far from me.

24O que já sucedeu é remoto e profundíssimo; quem o achará?

24That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

25Eu apliquei o meu coração para saber, e inquirir, e buscar a sabedoria e a razão das coisas, e para conhecer que a impiedade é insensatez e que a estultícia é loucura.

25I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason {of things}, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness {and} madness: {I applied...: Heb. I and mine heart compassed}

26E eu achei uma coisa mais amarga do que a morte, a mulher cujo coração são redes e laços, e cujas mãos são ataduras; quem for bom diante de Deus escapará dela, mas o pecador virá a ser preso por ela.

26And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart {is} snares and nets, {and} her hands {as} bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her. {whoso...: Heb. he that is good before God}

27Vedes aqui, isto achei, diz o pregador, conferindo uma coisa com a outra para achar a razão delas;

27Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, {counting} one by one, to find out the account: {counting...: or, weighing one thing after another, to find out the reason}

28A qual ainda busca a minha alma, porém ainda não a achei; um homem entre mil achei eu, mas uma mulher entre todas estas não achei.

28Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

29Eis aqui, o que tão-somente achei: que Deus fez ao homem reto, porém eles buscaram muitas astúcias.

29Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
