1Capítulo 6 — A relação dos cristãos com o mundo.

1Chapter 6 — The relation of Christians to the world.

2Resumindo tudo em uma palavra: o que a alma é no corpo, isso são os cristãos no mundo.

2To sum up all in one word— what the soul is in the body, that are Christians in the world.

3A alma está dispersa por todos os membros do corpo, e os cristãos estão espalhados por todas as cidades do mundo.

3The soul is dispersed through all the members of the body, and Christians are scattered through all the cities of the world.

4A alma habita no corpo, mas não pertence ao corpo; e os cristãos habitam no mundo, mas não são do mundo.

4The soul dwells in the body, yet is not of the body; and Christians dwell in the world, yet are not of the world.

5A alma invisível é guardada pelo corpo visível, e sabe-se que os cristãos estão de fato no mundo, mas a sua piedade permanece invisível.

5The invisible soul is guarded by the visible body, and Christians are known indeed to be in the world, but their godliness remains invisible.

6A carne odeia a alma e guerreia contra ela, embora não sofra nenhum dano, porque é impedida de desfrutar dos prazeres; o mundo também odeia os cristãos, embora de forma alguma feridos, porque eles abdicam dos prazeres.

6The flesh hates the soul, and wars against it, though itself suffering no injury, because it is prevented from enjoying pleasures; the world also hates the Christians, though in nowise injured, because they abjure pleasures.

7A alma ama a carne que a odeia e ama também os membros; Os cristãos também amam aqueles que os odeiam.

7The soul loves the flesh that hates it, and loves also the members; Christians likewise love those that hate them.

8A alma está aprisionada no corpo, mas preserva esse mesmo corpo; e os cristãos estão confinados no mundo como numa prisão, e ainda assim são os preservadores do mundo.

8The soul is imprisoned in the body, yet preserves that very body; and Christians are confined in the world as in a prison, and yet they are the preservers of the world.

9A alma imortal habita num tabernáculo mortal; e os cristãos habitam como peregrinos em corpos corruptíveis, procurando uma habitação incorruptível nos céus.

9The immortal soul dwells in a mortal tabernacle; and Christians dwell as sojourners in corruptible bodies, looking for an incorruptible dwelling in the heavens.

10A alma, quando mal provida de comida e bebida, melhora; da mesma maneira, os cristãos, embora sujeitos a punições dia após dia, aumentam ainda mais em número.

10The soul, when but ill-provided with food and drink, becomes better; in like manner, the Christians, though subjected day by day to punishment, increase the more in number.

11Deus lhes atribuiu esta posição ilustre, que era ilegal para eles abandonarem.

11God has assigned them this illustrious position, which it were unlawful for them to forsake.
