1Capítulo 5 — Os costumes dos cristãos.

1Chapter 5 — The manners of the Christians.

2Pois os cristãos não se distinguem dos outros homens nem pelo país, nem pela língua, nem pelos costumes que observam.

2For the Christians are distinguished from other men neither by country, nor language, nor the customs which they observe.

3Pois eles não habitam cidades próprias, nem empregam uma forma peculiar de falar, nem levam uma vida marcada por qualquer singularidade.

3For they neither inhabit cities of their own, nor employ a peculiar form of speech, nor lead a life which is marked out by any singularity.

4O curso de conduta que seguem não foi concebido por qualquer especulação ou deliberação de homens curiosos; nem eles, como alguns, se proclamam defensores de quaisquer doutrinas meramente humanas.

4The course of conduct which they follow has not been devised by any speculation or deliberation of inquisitive men; nor do they, like some, proclaim themselves the advocates of any merely human doctrines.

5Mas, habitando cidades gregas e também bárbaras, de acordo com a sorte de cada uma delas determinou, e seguindo os costumes dos nativos no que diz respeito ao vestuário, à alimentação e ao resto da sua conduta ordinária, eles mostram-nos o seu método de vida maravilhoso e reconhecidamente impressionante.

5But, inhabiting Greek as well as barbarian cities, according as the lot of each of them has determined, and following the customs of the natives in respect to clothing, food, and the rest of their ordinary conduct, they display to us their wonderful and confessedly striking method of life.

6Eles residem nos seus próprios países, mas simplesmente como peregrinos.

6They dwell in their own countries, but simply as sojourners.

7Como cidadãos, eles compartilham todas as coisas com os outros e, ainda assim, suportam todas as coisas como se fossem estrangeiros.

7As citizens, they share in all things with others, and yet endure all things as if foreigners.

8Toda terra estrangeira é para eles como seu país natal, e toda terra onde nasceram como uma terra de estranhos.

8Every foreign land is to them as their native country, and every land of their birth as a land of strangers.

9Eles se casam, assim como todos os outros; eles geram filhos; mas eles não destroem seus descendentes.

9They marry, as do all others; they beget children; but they do not destroy their offspring.

10Eles têm uma mesa comum, mas não uma cama comum.

10They have a common table, but not a common bed.

11Eles estão na carne, mas não vivem segundo a carne.

11They are in the flesh, but they do not live after the flesh.

12Eles passam seus dias na terra, mas são cidadãos do céu.

12They pass their days on earth, but they are citizens of heaven.

13Eles obedecem às leis prescritas e, ao mesmo tempo, superam as leis com suas vidas.

13They obey the prescribed laws, and at the same time surpass the laws by their lives.

14Eles amam todos os homens e são perseguidos por todos.

14They love all men, and are persecuted by all.

15São desconhecidos e condenados; eles são condenados à morte e restaurados à vida.

15They are unknown and condemned; they are put to death, and restored to life.

16Eles são pobres, mas enriquecem muitos; eles têm falta de todas as coisas e, ainda assim, são abundantes em tudo; eles são desonrados e, ainda assim, em sua própria desonra são glorificados.

16They are poor, yet make many rich; they are in lack of all things, and yet abound in all; they are dishonoured, and yet in their very dishonour are glorified.

17Eles são mal falados e, ainda assim, justificados; eles são insultados e abençoados; eles são insultados e retribuem o insulto com honra; eles fazem o bem, mas são punidos como malfeitores.

17They are evil spoken of, and yet are justified; they are reviled, and bless; they are insulted, and repay the insult with honour; they do good, yet are punished as evil-doers.

18Quando punidos, eles se regozijam como se tivessem sido vivificados; eles são atacados pelos judeus como estrangeiros e perseguidos pelos gregos; no entanto, aqueles que os odeiam são incapazes de atribuir qualquer razão ao seu ódio.

18When punished, they rejoice as if quickened into life; they are assailed by the Jews as foreigners, and are persecuted by the Greeks; yet those who hate them are unable to assign any reason for their hatred.
