Carta de Lêntulo 1

1Certo Lêntulo, romano, sendo funcionário dos romanos na província da Judeia no tempo de Tibério César, ao ver Cristo e observar Suas obras maravilhosas, Sua pregação, Seus milagres sem fim e outras coisas espantosas a Seu respeito, escreveu assim ao senado romano:

1A certain Lentulus, a Roman, being an official for the Romans in the province of Judaea in the time of Tiberius Caesar, upon seeing Christ, and noting his wonderful works, his preaching, his endless miracles, and other amazing things about him, wrote thus to the Roman senate:

2Nestes tempos apareceu, e ainda existe, um homem de grande poder chamado Jesus Cristo, que é chamado pelos gentios de profeta da verdade e cujos discípulos chamam de Filho de Deus, que ressuscita os mortos e cura todas as doenças.

2There hath appeared in these times, and still is, a man of great power named Jesus Christ, who is called by the Gentiles the prophet of truth, whom his disciples call the Son of God, raising the dead and healing all diseases.

3Um homem de estatura medianamente alta e belo, com semblante venerável, que aqueles que o contemplam podem amar e temer.

3A man in stature middling tall, and comely, having a reverend countenance, which they that look upon may love and fear.

4Com cabelos da cor de uma avelã verde e lisos quase até as orelhas, mas, a partir das orelhas, em cachos ondulados um tanto mais escuros e brilhantes, caindo sobre os ombros; com uma risca no meio da cabeça, segundo o costume dos nazarenos.

4Having hair of the hue of an unripe hazel-nut and smooth almost down to his ears, but from the ears in curling locks somewhat darker and more shining, waving over his shoulders; having a parting at the middle of the head according to the fashion of the Nazareans.

5Uma testa lisa e muito serena, com o rosto sem ruga nem qualquer defeito, que uma cor moderada torna belo; não se pode encontrar defeito algum no nariz nem na boca.

5A brow smooth and very calm, with a face without wrinkle or any blemish, which a moderate colour makes beautiful; with the nose and mouth no fault at all can be found.

6Com barba cheia da cor dos cabelos, não longa, mas um pouco bifurcada no queixo; com expressão simples e madura, olhos cinzentos, vivos e límpidos.

6Having a full beard of the colour of his hair, not long, but a little forked at the chin; having an expression simple and mature, the eyes grey, glancing and clear.

7Terrível na repreensão, bondoso e amável na admoestação, alegre, mas conservando a gravidade.

7In rebuke terrible, in admonition kind and lovable, cheerful yet keeping gravity.

8Às vezes chorou, mas nunca riu; de corpo alto e ereto, com mãos e braços belos de se contemplar.

8Sometimes he hath wept, but never laughed; in stature of body tall and straight, with hands and arms fair to look upon.

9Grave, reservado e modesto na conversa, mais belo do que os filhos dos homens.

9In talk grave, reserved and modest, fairer than the children of men.
