Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 4

1Entrando então sozinha em seu quarto, disse com lágrimas: De que maneira, meu Deus, agirei, ou que conselho tomarei, não sei.

1Then entering into her bed-chamber alone, she spoke thus with tears, In what way, my God, I shall act, or what counsel I shall take, I know not.

2Declararei o pensamento que me sobreveio?

2Shall I declare the thought that has come upon me?

3Temo o furor e o tumulto da cidade.

3I fear the madness and disorder of the city.

4Fugirei desta cidade ímpia?

4Shall I fly from this impious city?

5Temo os laços do diabo para arrebatar as ovelhas.

5I fear the contrivance of the devil for seizing the sheep.

6Esperarei a misericórdia e a prontidão do Senhor?

6Shall I await the mercy and swiftness of the Lord?

7Temo novamente o arrebatamento prematuro da vida, pois a morte dos pecadores não avisa.

7Again I fear the untimely snatching away of life, for the death of sinners has no warning.

8Partirei e fugirei para Roma?

8Shall I depart and flee away to Rome?

9Temo a extensão do caminho, sendo incapaz de ir a pé.

9I fear the length of the journey, being unable to go on foot.

10Mas enquanto digo estas coisas por conjectura, constrangida pelo meu desejo (pois não posso falar com segurança), ache eu perdão diante de Ti, meu Deus, e cumpre o meu desejo com abundância de palavras justas, e considera-me digna apenas de ouvir o Teu pregador; pois se digo que desejo ver-lhe o rosto, peço uma grande coisa.

10But while I say these things by conjecture, constrained by my desire (for I cannot speak with surety), may I find pardon with you, my God, and fulfil my desire with excess of right words, and think me but worthy to hear your preacher, for if I say, to see his face, I ask a great thing.

11Bem-aventurado aquele que se acha na companhia dos Teus pregadores e se sacia de seus preciosos semblantes.

11Blessed is he that is found in the company of your preachers, and is satisfied with their precious countenances.

12Bem-aventurados os que estão jungidos sob a pregação dos Teus mandamentos.

12Blessed are they that are yoked under the preaching of your commandments.

13Bem-aventurados os que guardam os Teus mandamentos; mas onde estão agora, Senhor, as Tuas misericórdias para com nossos pais, a fim de que nós também sejamos seus sucessores no amor para Contigo e herdeiros da fé?

13Blessed are they that keep your commandments; but where now, Lord, are your mercies to our fathers, that we also may be their successors in love toward you and heirs of faith.

14Mas eis que agora, Senhor, não posso encontrar a ninguém que tenha amor por Ti, para que, conversando com ele, possa ao menos um pouco refrigerar a minha alma.

14But behold now, Lord, I cannot find any one that has love for you, that communing with him I might even a little refresh my soul.

15Apressa-Te, pois, Senhor, a unir-me no desejo por Ti, e guarda-me sob a sombra das Tuas asas, pois só Tu és Deus, glorificado por toda a eternidade.

15Speed therefore, Lord, to yoke me in desire for you, and keep me under the shadow of your wings, for you alone are God, glorified to all eternity.
