Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 21

1Levantando-se Probo do solo, repousou no leito; e madrugando foi ter com Paulo, e encontrando-o a batizar a muitos em nome da Vivificante Trindade, disse: Meu senhor Paulo, se sou digno de receber o batismo, eis aqui o momento oportuno.

1Then Probus arising from the ground fell again upon the couch, and arising early he came to Paul, and finding him baptising many in the name of the life-giving Trinity, he said, My lord Paul, if only I were worthy to receive baptism, behold the hour.

2Disse-lhe Paulo: Filho, eis que as águas estão prontas para a purificação dos que vêm a Cristo.

2Paul said to him, Son, behold the water is ready for the cleansing of those that come to Christ.

3Despojando-se então imediatamente das vestes, e tomando-o Paulo, ele saltou à água, dizendo: Jesus Cristo, Filho de Deus e Deus eterno, que todos os meus pecados sejam removidos por esta água.

3Therefore immediately taking off his garments, and Paul laying hold of him, he leapt into the water, saying, Jesus Christ, son of God, and everlasting God, let all my sins be taken away by this water.

4E disse Paulo: Nós te batizamos em nome do Pai, do Filho e do Espírito Santo.

4And Paul said, We baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

5Depois disto ministrou-lhe a sagrada Eucaristia de Cristo.

5After this he made him to receive the eucharist of Christ.

6Então Xantipa, muito alegre, começou em casa, ao cair da tarde, junto com o marido, a animar todos os da casa e a preparar um banquete; e, quando chegaram, depois de ordenar que a ceia fosse magnífica, ela mesma subiu à câmara.

6Then Xanthippe, being greatly rejoiced, began in the house toward evening together with her husband to give good cheer to all those in the house, and to prepare a feast, and when they came, after giving orders for the supper to be magnificent she herself went up to the chamber.

7E eis que nas escadas um demônio, sob o aspecto de um comediante e oculto num canto escuro, tentou assustar e aterrorizar Xantipa.

7And behold on the stairs a demon coming in the likeness of one of the actors, and standing in a dark corner, was desirous to frighten and terrify Xanthippe.

8Mas ela, julgando ser o ator que costumava frequentar o palácio, disse indignada: Quantas vezes lhe avisei que não me deleito mais com frivolidades, e ele desdenha de mim por ser mulher!; e agarrando um pesado candelabro de ferro atirou-o contra a face dele, esmagando-lhe as feições.

8But she thinking it to be the actor that she ordinarily had, said in anger, Many a time have I said to him that I no longer care for toys, and he despises me as being a woman; and straightway seizing an iron lamp-stand, she hurled it at his face, and crushed all his features.

9Então o demônio gritou, dizendo: Ó violência, por causa deste destruidor até as mulheres receberam poder para nos golpear!

9Then the demon cried out, saying, O violence, from this destroyer even women have received power to strike us.

10E Xantipa ficou grandemente espantada.

10But Xanthippe was greatly afraid.
