Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 11

1E disse Xantipa a Paulo: Mestre, o meu coração consome-se de angústia porque ainda não recebi o batismo.

1And Xanthippe said to Paul, Teacher, my heart is greatly consumed because I have not as yet received baptism.

2Depois disto Probo, incitado novamente pelo diabo, expulsou Paulo de sua casa e encerrou Xantipa em seus aposentos.

2And after this Probus being again moved by the devil, cast Paul out of the house and shut up Xanthippe in her chamber.

3Então um dos homens principais, chamado Filoteu, rogou ao grande Paulo que entrasse em sua casa; mas o grande Paulo não queria fazê-lo, dizendo: Para que Probo não perturbe tua casa por minha causa.

3Then one of the chief men, Philotheus by name, besought the great Paul to come into his house, but the great Paul was unwilling to do so, saying, Lest Probus trouble your house on my account.

4Disse-lhe Filoteu: Não, pai, de modo algum estou sujeito a ele, pois em nada ele é maior do que eu, exceto em posição, e isso porque os pais de Xantipa estão acima de mim.

4Philotheus said to him, Nay, father, I am not at all subject to him, for in no other thing is he greater than me, except in rank, and that because the parents of Xanthippe are above me.

5Mas se Probo quiser contender comigo, avantajo-me a ele em riquezas e na arte militar.

5But if Probus come to me, I am above him in riches and in war.

6Persuadiu-se então Paulo, o grande apóstolo do Senhor, e transferiu-se para a residência de Filoteu, o ex-prefeito.

6Then Paul, the great apostle of the Lord, was persuaded, and went into the house of Philotheus the ex-prefect.

7Tudo isto maquinava o Maligno para que Xantipa recebesse o santo batismo em meio a muitas tribulações, e desfalecesse no cumprimento dos preceitos de Cristo.

7All this was done by the Evil one that Xanthippe might receive holy baptism with tribulation, and be faint-hearted concerning the commandments of Christ.
