Primeira Apologia de Justino 3

1Mas, para que ninguém considere esta declaração irracional e temerária, exigimos que se investiguem as acusações contra os cristãos e que, se forem comprovadas, eles sejam punidos como merecem; [ou melhor, nós mesmos os puniremos.] Porém, se ninguém pode provar que cometemos algo, a verdadeira razão vos proíbe de, por causa de um rumor maligno, fazer injustiça a homens inocentes e, na verdade, a vós mesmos, que julgais apropriado conduzir os assuntos não pelo discernimento, mas pela paixão. Toda pessoa sensata declarará que esta é a única solução justa e equitativa: que os súditos prestem contas irrepreensíveis de sua própria vida e doutrina e que, por sua vez, os governantes decidam em obediência não à violência e à tirania, mas à piedade e à filosofia. Assim, tanto governantes quanto governados seriam beneficiados.

1But lest any one think that this is an unreasonable and reckless utterance, we demand that the charges against the Christians be investigated, and that, if these be substantiated, they be punished as they deserve; [or rather, indeed, we ourselves will punish them.] But if no one can convict us of anything, true reason forbids you, for the sake of a wicked rumour, to wrong blameless men, and indeed rather yourselves, who think fit to direct affairs, not by judgment, but by passion. And every sober-minded person will declare this to be the only fair and equitable adjustment, namely, that the subjects render an unexceptional account of their own life and doctrine; and that, on the other hand, the rulers should give their decision in obedience, not to violence and tyranny, but to piety and philosophy. For thus would both rulers and ruled reap benefit.

2Pois até um dos antigos disse em algum lugar: "A menos que governantes e governados filosofem, é impossível tornar felizes os Estados." Cabe-nos, portanto, dar a todos a oportunidade de examinar nossa vida e nossos ensinamentos, para que não soframos, por causa daqueles que costumam ignorar nossos assuntos, a pena devida à cegueira mental deles; e cabe a vós, ao nos ouvirdes, mostrar-vos bons juízes, como exige a razão. Pois, se, depois de conhecerdes a verdade, não fizerdes o que é justo, estareis sem desculpa diante de Deus.

2For even one of the ancients somewhere said, "Unless both rulers and ruled philosophize, it is impossible to make states blessed." It is our task, therefore, to afford to all an opportunity of inspecting our life and teachings, lest, on account of those who are accustomed to be ignorant of our affairs, we should incur the penalty due to them for mental blindness; and it is your business, when you hear us, to be found, as reason demands, good judges. For if, when ye have learned the truth, you do not what is just, you will be before God without excuse.
