Primeira Apologia de Justino 16

1E, quanto a suportarmos as ofensas, estarmos prontos a servir a todos e sermos livres da ira, ele disse isto: "Àquele que te bater numa face, oferece também a outra; e não impeças aquele que te tirar a capa ou a túnica. E todo aquele que se irar corre o perigo do fogo. E a quem te obrigar a acompanhá-lo por uma milha, acompanha-o por duas. E brilhem vossas boas obras diante dos homens, para que eles, vendo-as, glorifiquem vosso Pai que está nos céus." Pois não devemos contender; tampouco ele quis que imitássemos homens perversos, mas nos exortou a conduzir todos os homens, com paciência e mansidão, para longe da vergonha e do amor ao mal.

1And concerning our being patient of injuries, and ready to serve all, and free from anger, this is what He said: "To him that smiteth thee on the one cheek, offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak or coat, forbid not. And whosoever shall be angry, is in danger of the fire. And every one that compelleth thee to go with him a mile, follow him two. And let your good works shine before men, that they, seeing them, may glorify your Father which is in heaven." For we ought not to strive; neither has He desired us to be imitators of wicked men, but He has exhorted us to lead all men, by patience and gentleness, from shame and the love of evil.

2E isso se comprova no caso de muitos que outrora pensavam como vós, mas mudaram sua disposição violenta e tirânica, vencidos pela constância que observaram na vida de seus vizinhos, ou pela extraordinária tolerância que viram em companheiros de viagem quando foram defraudados, ou pela honestidade daqueles com quem fizeram negócios.

2And this indeed is proved in the case of many who once were of your way of thinking, but have changed their violent and tyrannical disposition, being overcome either by the constancy which they have witnessed in their neighbours' lives, or by the extraordinary forbearance they have observed in their fellow-travellers when defrauded, or by the honesty of those with whom they have transacted business.

3E quanto a não jurarmos de modo algum e sempre falarmos a verdade, ele ordenou o seguinte: "Não jureis de modo algum; mas seja o vosso sim, sim, e o vosso não, não; pois tudo o que passa disso vem do mal." E que devemos adorar somente a Deus, assim nos persuadiu: "O maior mandamento é: Adorarás o Senhor teu Deus e só a ele servirás, com todo o teu coração e com toda a tua força, o Senhor Deus que te criou." E, quando certo homem se aproximou dele e disse: "Bom Mestre", ele respondeu: "Ninguém é bom senão somente Deus, que fez todas as coisas." E aqueles que não forem encontrados vivendo conforme ele ensinou sejam considerados não cristãos, embora professem com os lábios os preceitos de Cristo; pois, segundo sua palavra, serão salvos não os que professam, mas os que praticam as obras: "Nem todo aquele que me diz: Senhor, Senhor, entrará no reino dos céus, mas aquele que faz a vontade de meu Pai que está nos céus.

3And with regard to our not swearing at all, and always speaking the truth, He enjoined as follows: "Swear not at all; but let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay; for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." And that we ought to worship God alone, He thus persuaded us: "The greatest commandment is, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shall thou serve, with all thy heart, and with all thy strength, the Lord God that made thee." And when a certain man came to Him and said, "Good Master," He answered and said, "There is none good but God only, who made all things." And let those who are not found living as He taught, be understood to be no Christians, even though they profess with the lip the precepts of Christ; for not those who make profession, but those who do the works, shall be saved, according to His word: "Not every one who saith to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven.

4Pois todo aquele que me ouve e pratica minhas palavras ouve aquele que me enviou. E muitos me dirão: Senhor, Senhor, não comemos e bebemos em teu nome e não fizemos prodígios? Então lhes direi: Afastai-vos de mim, praticantes da iniquidade. Haverá então pranto e ranger de dentes, quando os justos brilharem como o sol e os perversos forem enviados ao fogo eterno. Pois muitos virão em meu nome, revestidos por fora de pele de ovelha, mas por dentro sendo lobos vorazes. Pelas suas obras os conhecereis. E toda árvore que não produz bom fruto é cortada e lançada ao fogo." Quanto àqueles que não vivem conforme esses ensinamentos dele e são cristãos apenas de nome, exigimos que todos sejam punidos por vós.

4For whosoever heareth Me, and doeth My sayings, heareth Him that sent Me. And many will say unto Me, Lord, Lord, have we not eaten and drunk in Thy name, and done wonders? And then will I say unto them, Depart from Me, ye workers of iniquity. Then shall there be wailing and gnashing of teeth, when the righteous shall shine as the sun, and the wicked are sent into everlasting fire. For many shall come in My name, clothed outwardly in sheep's clothing, but inwardly being ravening wolves. By their works ye shall know them. And every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down and cast into the fire." And as to those who are not living pursuant to these His teachings, and are Christians only in name, we demand that all such be punished by you.
