Apologia de Aristides 6

1Assim também erraram aqueles que creram que o sol é um deus. Pois vemos que ele é movido pela compulsão de outrem, gira e faz o seu curso, avançando de signo em signo, nascendo e pondo-se a cada dia para dar calor ao crescimento de plantas e árvores e para produzir no ar, com o qual a sua luz se mistura, toda coisa que brota sobre a terra. E a ele pertence, por comparação, uma parte em comum com as demais estrelas em seu curso; e conquanto seja um em sua natureza, acha-se associado a muitas partes para a provisão das necessidades dos homens, e isso não segundo a sua própria vontade, mas segundo a vontade Daquele que o rege. E por isso é impossível que o sol seja um deus, mas é a obra de Deus; e do mesmo modo também a lua e as estrelas.

1So also they erred who believed that the sun is a god. For we see that it is moved by the compulsion of another, and revolves and makes its journey, and proceeds from sign to sign, rising and setting every day, so as to give warmth for the growth of plants and trees, and to bring forth into the air wherewith it (sunlight) is mingled every growing thing which is upon the earth. And to it there belongs by comparison a part in common with the rest of the stars in its course; and though it is one in its nature it is associated with many parts for the supply of the needs of men; and that not according to its own will but rather according to the will of him who rules it. And hence it is impossible that the sun should be a god, but the work of God; and in like manner also the moon and the stars.
