Sabedoria de Ahicar 6

1E Haiqar foi para sua casa e escreveu uma carta, dizendo o seguinte:

1And Haiqar went to his dwelling, and wrote a letter, saying in it on this wise:

2'Desde Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria e Nínive, até Faraó, rei do Egito.

2'From Sennacherib king of Assyria and Nineveh to Pharaoh king of Egypt.

3'A paz esteja contigo, ó meu irmão! e o que te mostramos com isso é que um irmão precisa de seu irmão, e os reis uns dos outros, e minha esperança de você é que você me empreste novecentos talentos de ouro, pois preciso dele para o abastecimento de alguns dos soldados, para que eu possa gastá-lo com eles. E daqui a pouco eu te enviarei.'

3'Peace be to thee, O my brother! and what we make known to thee by this is that a brother has need of his brother, and kings of each other, and my hope from thee is that thou wouldst lend me nine hundred talents of gold, for I need it for the victualling of some of the soldiers, that I may spend it upon them. And after a little while I will send it thee.'

4Então ele dobrou a carta e no dia seguinte a apresentou ao Faraó.

4Then he folded the letter, and presented it on the morrow to Pharaoh.

5E quando ele viu isso, ficou perplexo e disse-lhe: 'Na verdade, nunca ouvi nada parecido com esta língua de ninguém.'

5And when he saw it, he was perplexed and said to him, 'Verily I have never heard anything like this language from any one.'

6Então Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Verdadeiramente esta é uma dívida que tens para com meu senhor, o rei.'

6Then Haiqar said to him, 'Truly this is a debt which thou owest to my lord the king.'

7E Faraó aceitou isso, dizendo, 'Ó Haiqar, é como você que é honesto no serviço dos reis.

7And Pharaoh accepted this, saying, 'O Haiqar, it is the like of thee who are honest in the service of kings.

8Bendito seja Deus que te aperfeiçoou em sabedoria e te adornou com filosofia e conhecimento.

8Blessed be God who hath made thee perfect in wisdom and hath adorned thee with philosophy and knowledge.

9E agora, ó Haiqar, resta o que desejamos de ti, que tu construas para nós um castelo entre o céu e a terra.'

9And now, O Haiqar, there remains what we desire from thee, that thou shouldst build us a castle between heaven and earth.'

10Então disse Haiqar: 'Ouvir é obedecer. Construirei para você um castelo de acordo com seu desejo e escolha; mas, ó meu senhor! prepare-nos cal, pedra, barro e trabalhadores, e eu tenho construtores habilidosos que construirão para ti como desejas.'

10Then said Haiqar, 'To hear is to obey. I will build thee a castle according to thy wish and choice; but, O my lord! prepare us lime and stone and clay and workmen, and I have skilled builders who will build for thee as thou desirest.'

11E o rei preparou tudo isso para ele, e eles foram para um lugar amplo; e Haiqar e seus meninos vieram até lá, e ele levou as águias e os jovens com ele; e o rei e todos os seus nobres foram e toda a cidade se reuniu, para que pudessem ver o que Haiqar faria.

11And the king prepared all that for him, and they went to a wide place; and Haiqar and his boys came to it, and he took the eagles and the young men with him; and the king and all his nobles went and the whole city assembled, that they might see what Haiqar would do.

12Então Haiqar soltou as águias das caixas, amarrou os jovens nas costas, amarrou as cordas nos pés das águias e os deixou voar no ar. E eles subiram, até permanecerem entre o céu e a terra.

12Then Haiqar let the eagles out of the boxes, and tied the young men on their backs, and tied the ropes to the eagles' feet, and let them go in the air. And they soared upwards, till they remained between heaven and earth.

13E os meninos começaram a gritar, dizendo: 'Tragam tijolos, tragam barro, para que possamos construir o castelo do rei, pois estamos parados!'

13And the boys began to shout, saying, 'Bring bricks, bring clay, that we may build the king's castle, for we are standing idle!'

14E a multidão ficou atônita e perplexa, e ficou maravilhada. E o rei e seus nobres ficaram maravilhados.

14And the crowd were astonished and perplexed, and they wondered. And the king and his nobles wondered.

15E Haiqar e seus servos começaram a espancar os trabalhadores e gritaram pelas tropas do rei, dizendo-lhes: 'Tragam aos trabalhadores qualificados o que eles querem e não os impeçam de seu trabalho.'

15And Haiqar and his servants began to beat the workmen and they shouted for the king's troops, saying to them, 'Bring to the skilled workmen what they want and do not hinder them from their work.'

16E o rei lhe disse: 'Tu estás louco; quem pode trazer alguma coisa até essa distância?'

16And the king said to him, 'Thou art mad; who can bring anything up to that distance?'

17E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor! como construiremos um castelo no ar? e se meu senhor, o rei, estivesse aqui, ele teria construído vários castelos em um único dia.'

17And Haiqar said to him, 'O my lord! how shall we build a castle in the air? and if my lord the king were here, he would have built several castles in a single day.'

18E Faraó disse-lhe: 'Vá, ó Haiqar, para a tua habitação e descanse, pois desistimos de construir o castelo, e amanhã venha até mim.'

18And Pharaoh said to him, 'Go, O Haiqar, to thy dwelling, and rest, for we have given up building the castle, and to-morrow come to me.'

19Então Haiqar foi para sua casa e no dia seguinte apareceu diante do Faraó. E Faraó disse: 'Ó Haiqar, que notícias há do cavalo de teu senhor? pois quando ele relincha na terra da Assíria e de Nínive, e nossas éguas ouvem sua voz, elas abandonam seus filhotes.

19Then Haiqar went to his dwelling and on the morrow he appeared before Pharaoh. And Pharaoh said, 'O Haiqar, what news is there of the horse of thy lord? for when he neighs in the country of Assyria and Nineveh, and our mares hear his voice, they cast their young.'

20E quando Haiqar ouviu esse discurso ele foi e pegou uma gata, amarrou-a e começou a açoitá-la com uma flagelação violenta até que os egípcios ouviram, e eles foram e contaram ao rei sobre isso.

20And when Haiqar heard this speech he went and took a cat, and bound her and began to flog her with a violent flogging till the Egyptians heard it, and they went and told the king about it.

21E Faraó mandou buscar Haiqar, e disse-lhe: 'Ó Haiqar, por que você açoita assim e bate naquela besta muda?'

21And Pharaoh sent to fetch Haiqar, and said to him, 'O Haiqar, wherefore dost thou flog thus and beat that dumb beast?'

22E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor, o rei! na verdade, ela cometeu uma ação feia comigo e mereceu esta surra e açoite, pois meu senhor, o rei Senaqueribe, me deu um belo galo, e ele tinha uma voz forte e verdadeira e sabia as horas do dia e da noite.

22And Haiqar said to him, 'O my lord the king! verily she has done an ugly deed to me, and has deserved this drubbing and flogging, for my lord king Sennacherib had given me a fine cock, and he had a strong true voice and knew the hours of the day and the night.

23E o gato levantou-se esta mesma noite, cortou a cabeça e foi embora, e por causa desse ato eu dei-lhe esta surra.'

23And the cat got up this very night and cut off its head and went away, and because of this deed I have treated her to this drubbing.'

24E Faraó disse-lhe: 'Ó Haiqar, vejo por tudo isso que você está envelhecendo e está senil, pois entre o Egito e Nínive há sessenta e oito parasangs, e como ela foi esta mesma noite e cortou a cabeça do seu galo e voltou?'

24And Pharaoh said to him, 'O Haiqar, I see from all this that thou art growing old and art in thy dotage, for between Egypt and Nineveh there are sixty-eight parasangs, and how did she go this very night and cut off the head of thy cock and come back?'

25E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor! se houvesse tanta distância entre o Egito e Nínive, como poderiam as tuas éguas ouvir quando o cavalo do meu senhor, o rei, relincha e lança seus filhotes? e como poderia a voz do cavalo chegar ao Egito?'

25And Haiqar said to him, 'O my lord! if there were such a distance between Egypt and Nineveh, how could thy mares hear when my lord the king's horse neighs and cast their young? and how could the voice of the horse reach to Egypt?'

26E quando o Faraó ouviu, soube que Haiqar havia respondido às suas perguntas.

26And when Pharaoh heard he knew that Haiqar had answered his questions.

27E Faraó disse: 'Ó Haiqar, quero que me faça cordas da areia do mar.'

27And Pharaoh said, 'O Haiqar, I want thee to make me ropes of the sea-sand.'

28E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor, o rei! ordene-lhes que me tragam uma corda do tesouro para que eu possa fazer uma igual.'

28And Haiqar said to him, 'O my lord the king! order them to bring me a rope out of the treasury that I may make one like it.'

29Então Haiqar foi até os fundos da casa e fez buracos na costa agitada do mar, e pegou um punhado de areia na mão, areia do mar, e quando o sol nasceu e penetrou nos buracos, ele espalhou a areia ao sol até que se tornasse como se fosse tecida como cordas.

29Then Haiqar went to the back of the house, and bored holes in the rough shore of the sea, and took a handful of sand in his hand, sea-sand, and when the sun rose, and penetrated into the holes, he spread the sand in the sun till it became as if woven like ropes.

30E Haiqar disse: 'Ordena a teus servos que peguem essas cordas, e sempre que desejares, eu te tecerei algumas como elas.'

30And Haiqar said, 'Command thy servants to take these ropes, and whenever thou desirest it, I will weave thee some like them.'

31E o Faraó disse: 'Ó Haiqar, temos uma pedra de moinho aqui e ela foi quebrada e quero que você a costure.'

31And Pharaoh said, 'O Haiqar, we have a millstone here and it has been broken and I want thee to sew it up.'

32Então Haiqar olhou para ela e encontrou outra pedra.

32Then Haiqar looked at it and found another stone.

33E ele disse ao Faraó. 'Ó meu senhor! Sou estrangeira e não tenho ferramentas para costurar.

33And he said to Pharaoh. 'O my lord! I am a foreigner and I have no tool for sewing.

34Mas eu quero que você ordene aos seus fiéis sapateiros que cortem furadores nesta pedra, para que eu possa costurar aquela mó.'

34But I want thee to command thy faithful shoemakers to cut awls from this stone, that I may sew that millstone.'

35Então Faraó e todos os seus nobres riram. E ele disse: 'Bendito seja o Deus Altíssimo, que te deu esta inteligência e conhecimento.'

35Then Pharaoh and all his nobles laughed. And he said, 'Blessed be the Most High God, who gave thee this wit and knowledge.'

36E quando Faraó viu que Haiqar o havia vencido e lhe devolveu suas respostas, ele imediatamente ficou entusiasmado e ordenou que cobrassem para ele impostos de três anos e os trouxessem para Haiqar.

36And when Pharaoh saw that Haiqar had overcome him, and returned him his answers, he at once became excited, and commanded them to collect for him three years' taxes, and to bring them to Haiqar.

37E ele despiu suas vestes e as colocou sobre Haiqar, e seus soldados, e seus servos, e deu-lhe as despesas de sua viagem.

37And he stripped off his robes and put them upon Haiqar, and his soldiers, and his servants, and gave him the expenses of his journey.

38E ele lhe disse: 'Vá em paz, ó força de seu senhor e orgulho de seus Médicos! tem algum dos sultões como você? dê minhas saudações ao teu senhor, o rei Senaqueribe, e diga-lhe como lhe enviamos presentes, pois os reis se contentam com pouco.'

38And he said to him, 'Go in peace, O strength of his lord and pride of his Doctors! have any of the Sultans thy like? give my greetings to thy lord king Sennacherib, and say to him how we have sent him gifts, for kings are content with little.'

39Então Haiqar levantou-se e beijou as mãos do rei Faraó e beijou o chão à sua frente, e desejou-lhe força e continuidade, e abundância em seu tesouro, e disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor! Desejo de ti que nenhum de nossos compatriotas permaneça no Egito.'

39Then Haiqar arose, and kissed king Pharaoh's hands and kissed the ground in front of him, and wished him strength and continuance, and abundance in his treasury, and said to him, 'O my lord! I desire from thee that not one of our countrymen may remain in Egypt.'

40E Faraó levantou-se e enviou arautos para proclamar nas ruas do Egito que nenhum dos povos da Assíria ou de Nínive deveria permanecer na terra do Egito, mas que eles deveriam ir com Haiqar.

40And Pharaoh arose and sent heralds to proclaim in the streets of Egypt that not one of the people of Assyria or Nineveh should remain in the land of Egypt, but that they should go with Haiqar.

41Então Haiqar foi e despediu-se do rei Faraó e partiu em busca da terra da Assíria e de Nínive; e ele tinha alguns tesouros e muita riqueza.

41Then Haiqar went and took leave of king Pharaoh, and journeyed, seeking the land of Assyria and Nineveh; and he had some treasures and a great deal of wealth.

42E quando a notícia chegou ao rei Senaqueribe de que Haiqar estava vindo, ele saiu ao seu encontro e se alegrou muito com ele com grande alegria e o abraçou e beijou, e disse-lhe: 'Bem-vindo ao lar, ó parente! meu irmão Haiqar, a força do meu reino e o orgulho do meu reino.

42And when the news reached king Sennacherib that Haiqar was coming, he went out to meet him and rejoiced over him exceedingly with great joy and embraced him and kissed him, and said to him, 'Welcome home, O kinsman! my brother Haiqar, the strength of my kingdom, and pride of my realm.

43Pergunte o que você gostaria de receber de mim, mesmo que deseje a metade do meu reino e dos meus bens.'

43Ask what thou wouldst have from me, even if thou desirest the half of my kingdom and of my possessions.'

44Então disse-lhe Haiqar: 'Ó meu senhor, o rei, viva para sempre! Mostre favor, ó meu senhor, o rei! a Abu Samik em meu lugar, pois minha vida estava nas mãos de Deus e nas dele.'

44Then said Haiqar unto him, 'O my lord the king, live for ever! Show favour, O my lord the king! to Abu Samik in my stead, for my life was in the hands of God and in his.'

45Então disse o rei Senaqueribe: 'Honra a ti, ó meu amado Haiqar! Farei com que a posição de Abu Samik, o espadachim, seja superior à de todos os meus Conselheiros Privados e dos meus favoritos.'

45Then said Sennacherib the king, 'Honour be to thee, O my beloved Haiqar! I will make the station of Abu Samik the swordsman higher than all my Privy Councillors and my favourites.'

46Então o rei começou a perguntar-lhe como ele havia se dado com o Faraó desde a sua primeira chegada até que ele saiu de sua presença, e como ele havia respondido a todas as suas perguntas, e como havia recebido dele os impostos, e as mudanças de roupas e os presentes.

46Then the king began to ask him how he had got on with Pharaoh from his first arrival until he had come away from his presence, and how he had answered all his questions, and how he had received the taxes from him, and the changes of raiment and the presents.

47E Senaqueribe, o rei, regozijou-se com grande alegria, e disse a Haiqar: 'Pegue o que você deseja deste tributo, pois está tudo ao alcance de sua mão.'

47And Sennacherib the king rejoiced with a great joy, and said to Haiqar, 'Take what thou wouldst fain have of this tribute, for it is all within the grasp of thy hand.'

48E Haiqar disse: 'Deixe o rei viver para sempre! Não desejo nada além da segurança de meu senhor, o rei, e a continuação de sua grandeza.

48And Haiqar said: 'Let the king live for ever! I desire naught but the safety of my lord the king and the continuance of his greatness.

49Ó meu senhor! o que posso fazer com a riqueza e coisas do gênero? mas se você me mostrar favor, dê-me Nadan, o filho de minha irmã, para que eu possa recompensá-lo pelo que ele fez comigo, e conceda-me seu sangue e me considere inocente disso.'

49O my lord! what can I do with wealth and its like? but if thou wilt show me favour, give me Nadan, my sister's son, that I may recompense him for what he has done to me, and grant me his blood and hold me guiltless of it.'

50E Senaqueribe, o rei, disse: 'Toma-o, eu o dei a ti', E Haiqar pegou Nadan, filho de sua irmã, e amarrou suas mãos com correntes de ferro, e o levou para sua habitação, e colocou um grilhão pesado em seus pés, e amarrou-o com um nó apertado, e depois de amarrá-lo assim, ele o lançou em um quarto escuro, ao lado do local de descanso, e nomeou Nabu-hal como sentinela sobre ele e ordenou-lhe que lhe desse um pão de pão e um pouco de água todos os dias.

50And Sennacherib the king said, 'Take him, I have given him to thee,' And Haiqar took Nadan, his sister's son, and bound his hands with chains of iron, and took him to his dwelling, and put a heavy fetter on his feet, and tied it with a tight knot, and after binding him thus he cast him into a dark room, beside the retiring-place, and appointed Nebu-hal as sentinel over him and commanded him to give him a loaf of bread and a little water every day.
