1E ele fez como o rei lhe ordenou e descansou quarenta dias.

1And he did as the king commanded him, and took a rest for forty days.

2Então ele se vestiu com seu vestido mais alegre e foi cavalgar até o rei, com seus escravos atrás e à frente dele, regozijando-se e encantado.

2Then he dressed himself in his gayest dress, and went riding to the king, with his slaves behind him and before him, rejoicing and delighted.

3Mas quando Nadan, filho de sua irmã, percebeu o que estava acontecendo, o medo e o terror se apoderaram dele, e ele ficou perplexo, sem saber o que fazer.

3But when Nadan his sister's son perceived what was happening, fear took hold of him and terror, and he was perplexed, not knowing what to do.

4E quando Haiqar viu isso, ele entrou na presença do rei e o cumprimentou, e ele retribuiu a saudação e o fez sentar ao seu lado, dizendo-lhe: 'Ó meu querido Haiqar! olha estas cartas que o rei do Egito nos enviou, depois de saber que foste morto.

4And when Haiqar saw it he entered into the king's presence and greeted him, and he returned the greeting, and made him sit down at his side, saying to him, 'O my darling Haiqar! look at these letters which the king of Egypt sent to us, after he had heard that thou wast slain.

5Eles nos provocaram e nos venceram, e muitas pessoas do nosso país fugiram para o Egito por medo dos impostos que o rei do Egito enviou para exigir de nós.'

5They have provoked us and overcome us, and many of the people of our country have fled to Egypt for fear of the taxes that the king of Egypt has sent to demand from us.'

6Então Haiqar pegou a carta e leu e entendeu todo o seu conteúdo.

6Then Haiqar took the letter and read it and understood all its contents.

7Então ele disse ao rei: Não te ira, meu senhor! Irei ao Egito, e entregarei as respostas a Faraó, e mostrar-lhe-ei esta carta, e responder-lhe-ei sobre os impostos, e enviarei de volta todos os que fugiram; e envergonharei os teus inimigos com a ajuda do Deus Altíssimo e para a felicidade do teu reino.'

7Then he said to the king, Be not wroth, O my lord! I will go to Egypt, and I will return the answers to Pharaoh, and I will display this letter to him, and I will reply to him about the taxes, and I will send back all those who have run away; and I will put thy enemies to shame with the help of the Most High God, and for the happiness of thy kingdom.'

8E quando o rei ouviu este discurso de Haiqar ele se alegrou com grande alegria, e seu coração se expandiu e ele lhe mostrou favor.

8And when the king heard this speech from Haiqar he rejoiced with a great joy, and his heart was expanded and he showed him favour.

9E Haiqar disse ao rei: 'Conceda-me um atraso de quarenta dias para que eu possa considerar esta questão e administrá-la.' E o rei permitiu isso.

9And Haiqar said to the king: 'Grant me a delay of forty days that I may consider this question and manage it.' And the king permitted this.

10E Haiqar foi para sua habitação, e ordenou aos caçadores que capturassem duas águias jovens para ele, e eles as capturaram e as trouxeram para ele: e ele ordenou aos tecelões de cordas que tecessem dois cabos de algodão para ele, cada um deles com dois mil côvados de comprimento, e ele mandou trazer os carpinteiros e ordenou-lhes que fizessem duas grandes caixas, e eles fizeram isso.

10And Haiqar went to his dwelling, and he commanded the huntsmen to capture two young eaglets for him, and they captured them and brought them to him: and he commanded the weavers of ropes to weave two cables of cotton for him, each of them two thousand cubits long, and he had the carpenters brought and ordered them to make two great boxes, and they did this.

11Então ele pegou dois garotinhos e passou todos os dias sacrificando cordeiros e alimentando as águias e os meninos, e fazendo os meninos cavalgarem nas costas das águias, e ele os amarrou com um nó firme, e amarrou o cabo aos pés das águias e os deixou subir pouco a pouco todos os dias, a uma distância de dez côvados, até que eles se acostumassem e fossem educados a isso; e eles subiram por toda a extensão da corda até alcançarem o céu; os meninos estavam de costas. Então ele os atraiu para si.

11Then he took two little lads, and spent every day sacrificing lambs and feeding the eagles and the boys, and making the boys ride on the backs of the eagles, and he bound them with a firm knot, and tied the cable to the feet of the eagles and let them soar upwards little by little every day, to a distance of ten cubits, till they grew accustomed and were educated to it; and they rose all the length of the rope till they reached the sky; the boys being on their backs. Then he drew them to himself.

12E quando Haiqar viu que seu desejo foi realizado, ele ordenou aos meninos que, quando fossem levados para o céu, gritassem, dizendo:

12And when Haiqar saw that his desire was fulfilled he charged the boys that when they were borne aloft to the sky they were to shout, saying:

13Traga-nos barro e pedra para que possamos construir um castelo para o rei Faraó, pois estamos ociosos.'

13Bring us clay and stone that we may build a castle for king Pharaoh, for we are idle.'

14E Haiqar nunca terminava de treiná-los e exercitá-los até que atingissem o ponto máximo possível (de habilidade).

14And Haiqar was never done training them and exercising them till they had reached the utmost possible point (of skill).

15Então, deixando-os, ele foi até o rei e disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor! o trabalho está concluído de acordo com o teu desejo. Levante-se comigo para que eu possa te mostrar a maravilha.'

15Then leaving them he went to the king and said to him, 'O my lord! the work is finished according to thy desire. Arise with me that I may show thee the wonder.'

16Então o rei levantou-se de um salto e sentou-se com Haiqar e foi para um lugar amplo e mandou trazer as águias e os meninos, e Haiqar os amarrou e os soltou no ar por toda a extensão das cordas e eles começaram a gritar como ele os havia ensinado. Então ele os atraiu para si e os colocou em seus lugares.

16So the king sprang up and sat with Haiqar and went to a wide place and sent to bring the eagles and the boys, and Haiqar tied them and let them off into the air all the length of the ropes and they began to shout as he had taught them. Then he drew them to himself and put them in their places.

17E o rei e aqueles que estavam com ele ficaram maravilhados: e o rei beijou Haiqar entre os olhos e disse-lhe: 'Vá em paz, ó meu amado! Ó orgulho do meu reino! ao Egito e responder às perguntas do Faraó e vencê-lo pela força do Deus Altíssimo.'

17And the king and those who were with him wondered with a great wonder: and the king kissed Haiqar between his eyes and said to him, 'Go in peace, O my beloved! O pride of my kingdom! to Egypt and answer the questions of Pharaoh and overcome him by the strength of the Most High God.'

18Então despediu-se dele, e tomou as suas tropas, e o seu exército, e os mancebos, e as águias, e foi em direção às habitações do Egito; e quando ele chegou, voltou-se para o país do rei.

18Then he bade him farewell, and took his troops and his army and the young men and the eagles, and went towards the dwellings of Egypt; and when he had arrived, he turned towards the country of the king.

19E quando o povo do Egito soube que Senaqueribe havia enviado um homem de seu Conselho Privado para conversar com Faraó e responder suas perguntas, eles levaram a notícia ao rei Faraó, e ele enviou um grupo de seus Conselheiros Privados para trazê-lo diante dele.

19And when the people of Egypt knew that Sennacherib had sent a man of his Privy Council to talk with Pharaoh and to answer his questions, they carried the news to king Pharaoh, and he sent a party of his Privy Councillors to bring him before him.

20E ele veio e entrou na presença de Faraó, e prestou-lhe reverências como convém fazer aos reis.

20And he came and entered into the presence of Pharaoh, and did obeisance to him as it is fitting to do to kings.

21E ele lhe disse: 'Ó meu senhor, o rei! Senaqueribe, o rei, te saúda com abundância de paz, poder e honra.

21And he said to him: 'O my lord the king! Sennacherib the king hails thee with abundance of peace and might, and honour.

22E ele me enviou, que sou um de seus escravos, para que eu possa responder às tuas perguntas e realizar todos os teus desejos; pois enviaste buscar ao meu senhor, o rei, um homem que te construa um castelo entre o céu e a terra.

22And he has sent me, who am one of his slaves, that I may answer thee thy questions, and may fulfil all thy desire: for thou hast sent to seek from my lord the king a man who will build thee a castle between the heaven and the earth.

23E eu, com a ajuda do Deus Altíssimo e do teu nobre favor e do poder do meu senhor, o rei, construirei para ti como desejas.

23And I by the help of the Most High God and thy noble favour and the power of my lord the king will build it for thee as thou desirest.

24Mas, ó meu senhor, o rei! o que você disse nele sobre os impostos do Egito por três anos - agora a estabilidade de um reino é justiça estrita, e se você vencer e minha mão não tiver habilidade em responder a você, então meu senhor, o rei, lhe enviará os impostos que você mencionou.

24But, O my lord the king! what thou hast said in it about the taxes of Egypt for three years - now the stability of a kingdom is strict justice, and if thou winnest and my hand hath no skill in replying to thee, then my lord the king will send thee the taxes which thou hast mentioned.

25E se eu tiver respondido às tuas perguntas, caberá a ti enviar tudo o que mencionaste ao meu senhor, o rei.'

25And if I shall have answered thee in thy questions, it shall remain for thee to send whatever thou hast mentioned to my lord the king.'

26E quando Faraó ouviu aquele discurso, ele ficou maravilhado e perplexo com a liberdade de sua língua e a gentileza de sua fala.

26And when Pharaoh heard that speech, he wondered and was perplexed by the freedom of his tongue and the pleasantness of his speech.

27E o rei Faraó disse-lhe: 'Ó homem! qual é o seu nome?' E ele disse: 'Teu servo é Abiqam, e eu sou uma formiguinha das formigas do rei Senaqueribe.'

27And king Pharaoh said to him, 'O man! what is thy name?' And he said, 'Thy servant is Abiqam, and I am a little ant of the ants of king Sennacherib.'

28E Faraó disse-lhe: 'Seu senhor não tinha ninguém de maior dignidade do que tu, que me enviou uma formiguinha para me responder e conversar comigo?'

28And Pharaoh said to him, 'Had thy lord no one of higher dignity than thee, that he has sent me a little ant to reply to me, and to converse with me?'

29E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor, o rei! Quisera ao Deus Altíssimo que eu pudesse cumprir o que está em tua mente, pois Deus está com os fracos para confundir os fortes.'

29And Haiqar said to him, 'O my lord the king! I would to God Most High that I may fulfill what is on thy mind, for God is with the weak that He may confound the strong.'

30Então Faraó ordenou que preparassem uma habitação para Abiqão e lhe fornecessem forragem, comida, bebida e tudo o que ele precisasse.

30Then Pharaoh commanded that they should prepare a dwelling for Abiqam and supply him with provender, meat, and drink, and all that he needed.

31E quando terminou, três dias depois o Faraó vestiu-se de púrpura e vermelho e sentou-se no seu trono, e todos os seus vizires e os magnatas do seu reino estavam de pé com as mãos cruzadas, os pés juntos e as cabeças inclinadas.

31And when it was finished, three days afterwards Pharaoh clothed himself in purple and red and sat on his throne, and all his viziers and the magnates of his kingdom were standing with their hands crossed, their feet close together, and their heads bowed.

32E Faraó mandou buscar Abiqam, e quando ele foi apresentado a ele, ele fez reverência diante dele e beijou o chão na frente dele.

32And Pharaoh sent to fetch Abiqam, and when he was presented to him, he did obeisance before him, and kissed the ground in front of him.

33E o rei Faraó disse-lhe: 'Ó Abiqam, com quem sou semelhante? e os nobres do meu reino, com quem eles se parecem?'

33And king Pharaoh said to him, 'O Abiqam, whom am I like? and the nobles of my kingdom, to whom are they like?'

34E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor, o rei! tu és como o ídolo Bel, e os nobres do teu reino são como seus servos.'

34And Haiqar said to him, 'O my lord the king! thou art like the idol Bel, and the nobles of thy kingdom are like his servants.'

35Ele lhe disse: 'Vá e volte aqui amanhã.' Então Haiqar partiu como o rei Faraó lhe havia ordenado.

35He said to him, 'Go, and come back hither to-morrow.' So Haiqar went as king Pharaoh had commanded him.

36E no dia seguinte Haiqar foi à presença do Faraó, e fez reverência, e ficou diante do rei. E o Faraó estava vestido de vermelho, e os nobres estavam vestidos de branco.

36And on the morrow Haiqar went into the presence of Pharaoh, and did obeisance, and stood before the king. And Pharaoh was dressed in a red colour, and the nobles were dressed in white.

37E Faraó disse-lhe: 'Ó Abiqam, com quem sou semelhante? e os nobres do meu reino, com quem eles se parecem?'

37And Pharaoh said to him, 'O Abiqam, whom am I like? and the nobles of my kingdom, to whom are they like?'

38E Abiqam disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor! tu és como o sol, e os teus servos são como os seus raios.' E Faraó lhe disse: 'Vá para a tua habitação e venha aqui amanhã.'

38And Abiqam said to him, 'O my lord! thou art like the sun, and thy servants are like its beams.' And Pharaoh said to him, 'Go to thy dwelling, and come hither to-morrow.'

39Então o Faraó ordenou que sua corte se vestisse de branco puro, e o Faraó se vestiu como eles e sentou-se em seu trono e ordenou-lhes que buscassem Haiqar. E ele entrou e sentou-se diante dele.

39Then Pharaoh commanded his Court to wear pure white, and Pharaoh was dressed like them and sat upon his throne and he commanded them to fetch Haiqar. And he entered and sat down before him.

40E Faraó disse-lhe: 'Ó Abiqam, com quem sou semelhante? e meus nobres, com quem eles se parecem?'

40And Pharaoh said to him, 'O Abiqam, whom am I like? and my nobles, to whom are they like?'

41E Abiqam disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor! tu és como a lua, e teus nobres são como os planetas e as estrelas.' E Faraó lhe disse: 'Vai, e amanhã estará aqui.'

41And Abiqam said to him, 'O my lord! thou art like the moon, and thy nobles are like the planets and the stars.' And Pharaoh said to him, 'Go, and to-morrow be thou here.'

42Então Faraó ordenou a seus servos que usassem túnicas de várias cores, e Faraó usou um vestido de veludo vermelho, sentou-se em seu trono e ordenou-lhes que buscassem Abiqam. E ele entrou e prestou homenagem diante dele.

42Then Pharaoh commanded his servants to wear robes of various colours, and Pharaoh wore a red velvet dress, and sat on his throne, and commanded them to fetch Abiqam. And he entered and did obeisance before him.

43E ele disse: 'Ó Abiqam, com quem sou? e meus exércitos, com quem eles se parecem?' E ele disse: 'Ó meu senhor! tu és como o mês de abril, e teus exércitos são como suas flores.'

43And he said, 'O Abiqam, whom am I like? and my armies, to whom are they like?' And he said, 'O my lord! thou art like the month of April, and thy armies are like its flowers.'

44E quando o rei ouviu isso, ele se alegrou com grande alegria e disse: 'Ó Abiqam! a primeira vez que me comparaste ao ídolo Bel, e os meus nobres aos seus servos.

44And when the king heard it he rejoiced with a great joy, and said, 'O Abiqam! the first time thou didst compare me to the idol Bel, and my nobles to his servants.

45E na segunda vez você me comparou ao sol, e meus nobres ao raio de sol.'

45And the second time thou didst compare me to the sun, and my nobles to the sunbeam.'

46E na terceira vez você me comparou à lua, e meus nobres aos planetas e às estrelas.'

46And the third time thou didst compare me to the moon, and my nobles to the planets and the stars.'

47E na quarta vez você me comparou ao mês de abril, e meus nobres às suas flores. Mas agora, ó Abiqam! diga-me, teu senhor, rei Senaqueribe, com quem ele se parece? e seus nobres, com quem eles se parecem?'

47And the fourth time thou didst compare me to the month of April, and my nobles to its flowers. But now, O Abiqam! tell me, thy lord, king Sennacherib, whom is he like? and his nobles, to whom are they like?'

48E Haiqar gritou em alta voz e disse: 'Esteja longe de mim fazer menção de meu senhor, o rei, e de ti sentado em teu trono. Mas levante-se para que eu possa lhe dizer com quem é meu senhor, o rei, e com quem são seus nobres.'

48And Haiqar shouted with a loud voice and said: 'Be it far from me to make mention of my lord the king and thou seated on thy throne. But get up on thy feet that I may tell thee whom my lord the king is like and to whom his nobles are like.'

49E Faraó ficou perplexo com a liberdade de sua língua e com sua ousadia em responder. Então Faraó levantou-se de seu trono e ficou diante de Haiqar, e disse-lhe: 'Diga-me agora, para que eu possa perceber com quem é semelhante ao rei o teu senhor, e a seus nobres, com quem eles são semelhantes.'

49And Pharaoh was perplexed by the freedom of his tongue and his boldness in answering. Then Pharaoh arose from his throne, and stood before Haiqar, and said to him, 'Tell me now, that I may perceive whom thy lord the king is like, and his nobles, to whom they are like.'

50E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Meu senhor é o Deus do céu, e seus nobres são os relâmpagos e os trovões, e quando ele quer os ventos sopram e a chuva cai.

50And Haiqar said to him: 'My lord is the God of heaven, and his nobles are the lightnings and the thunder, and when he wills the winds blow and the rain falls.

51E ele comanda o trovão, e ele ilumina e chove, e ele segura o sol, e ele não dá a sua luz, e a lua e as estrelas, e elas não circulam.

51And he commands the thunder, and it lightens and rains, and he holds the sun, and it gives not its light, and the moon and the stars, and they circle not.

52E ele comanda a tempestade, e ela sopra e a chuva cai e pisoteia abril e destrói suas flores e suas casas.'

52And he commands the tempest, and it blows and the rain falls and it tramples on April and destroys its flowers and its houses.'

53E quando Faraó ouviu este discurso, ele ficou muito perplexo e irou-se com grande ira, e disse-lhe: 'Ó homem! diga-me a verdade e deixe-me saber quem você realmente é.'

53And when Pharaoh heard this speech, he was greatly perplexed and was wroth with a great wrath, and said to him: 'O man! tell me the truth, and let me know who thou really art.'

54E ele lhe contou a verdade. 'Eu sou Haiqar, o escriba, o maior dos Conselheiros Privados do rei Senaqueribe, e sou seu vizir, governador de seu reino e seu chanceler.'

54And he told him the truth. 'I am Haiqar the scribe, greatest of the Privy Councillors of king Sennacherib, and I am his vizier and the Governor of his kingdom, and his Chancellor.'

55E ele lhe disse: 'Tu disseste a verdade nesta palavra. Mas ouvimos falar de Haiqar, que o rei Senaqueribe o matou, mas você parece estar vivo e bem.'

55And he said to him, 'Thou hast told the truth in this saying. But we have heard of Haiqar, that king Sennacherib has slain him, yet thou dost seem to be alive and well.'

56E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Sim, foi assim, mas louvado seja Deus, que conhece o que está escondido, pois meu senhor, o rei, ordenou que eu fosse morto, e ele acreditou na palavra de homens perdulários, mas o Senhor me livrou, e bem-aventurado aquele que nele confia.'

56And Haiqar said to him, 'Yes, so it was, but praise be to God, who knoweth what is hidden, for my lord the king commanded me to be killed, and he believed the word of profligate men, but the Lord delivered me, and blessed is he who trusteth in Him.'

57E Faraó disse a Haiqar: 'Vá, e amanhã esteja aqui e diga-me uma palavra que nunca ouvi de meus nobres nem do povo de meu reino e de meu país.'

57And Pharaoh said to Haiqar, 'Go, and to-morrow be thou here, and tell me a word that I have never heard from my nobles nor from the people of my kingdom and my country.'
