1Sucedeu-lhe Serugue seu filho, em cujos dias o culto a ídolos de pedra espalhou-se abertamente pelo mundo.

1After him came Serok his son, in whose days idol-gods of stone, were openly worshipped in the world.

2Começaram os homens a esculpir imagens idólatras, sendo as primeiras Cáliton e Helodão.

2The children of men began to make idols of stone, the first of which were Kalithon and Helodon.

3E os filhos dos homens se multiplicaram sobre a terra, e sua maldade também aumentou; pois não tinham lei nem ordem, nem mestres que os guiassem no caminho da justiça, nem alguém que fosse juiz entre eles.

3And the children of men multiplied upon the earth, and their wickedness increased also; for they had neither law nor order; and no teachers to guide them in the way of righteousness; nor any one to be judge among them.

4Por isso se tornaram cada vez piores e se afastaram mais do caminho de Deus; cada um fazia o que bem queria e fizeram para si deuses ídolos, aos quais adoravam.

4Wherefore they grew worse and worse, and wandered farther from the way of God; every one of them did what he himself listed; and they made for themselves idol-gods, which they worshipped.

5Desesperando da ressurreição dos mortos, ao sepultarem os falecidos erguiam um ídolo sobre o túmulo, apregoando que aquela estátua velaria pelo defunto na sepultura.

5They had no hope in the resurrection of the dead, yet whenever one of them died, they buried him, and set up an idol over his grave; and said, that was his god, that would show him mercy in his grave.

6Diziam também, a respeito do morto, que, quando a imagem de seu deus fosse erguida sobre sua sepultura, sua lembrança não desapareceria da face da terra.

6They said also, as regards the dead, that when his god was set up over his grave, the remembrance of him, would not be cut off from the face of the earth.

7Este engano partiu das maquinações de Satanás, enchendo-se o orbe de estátuas de homens e mulheres.

7This was a common saying brought out by Satan; and the earth was thus filled with idols; and those idols were of divers kinds, men and women.

8Faleceu Serugue aos duzentos e trinta anos, sendo sepultado em Sarania, cidade que erguera em sua memória.

8After this Serok died two hundred and thirty years old; and they embalmed him in Sar'ania his city, that was built in his name.

9Depois Naor, aos vinte e nove anos, gerou a Terá.

9After that Nahor, when 29 years old begat Terah.

10Aos oitenta e seis anos de Naor, olhou Deus para a humanidade e contemplou-a arruinada pela idolatria.

10And when Nahor was 86 years of age, God looked down upon the children of men, and saw that they were ruined and worshipped idols.

11Enviou o Senhor furacões, tempestades e tremores de terra que despedaçaram os ídolos uns contra os outros.

11Then God sent forth winds, and the whirlwind, and earth quakes on the earth, until the idols were broken one against another.

12Contudo, os filhos dos homens não se arrependeram de seus pecados, nem se voltaram a Deus, abandonando suas iniquidades para que Ele os salvasse; antes, aumentaram sua maldade.

12Yet the children of men did not repent of their sins, neither did they turn to God from their iniquities that He might save them; yet rather increased in wickedness.

13E no vigésimo ano da vida de Terá, o culto aos ídolos se espalhou pela terra na cidade de Arate, que Barvim, filho de Éber, havia construído.

13And in the twentieth year of Terah's life, the worship of idols spread over the earth in the city of Aarat, which Barwin, the son of Eber, had built.

14Morrendo ali um magnata opulento, seu filho moldou um simulacro de ouro com as feições paternas e colocou-o sobre a sepultura.

14And at that time there was a rich man living in it, who died; and his son made an idol of gold in the likeness of his father, and set it up on his father's grave.

15Então ordenou a um de seus servos que permanecesse junto ao ídolo e o servisse: que varresse o chão ao redor dele, lhe derramasse água e queimasse incenso.

15He then ordered one of his servants, to stand by the idol, and to minister unto it; to sweep the ground around it, to pour water to it and to burn incense.

16Aproveitou-se Satanás da farsa, incorporou no ídolo de ouro e falou ao servo imitando a voz do falecido: Agrada-me o teu zelo.

16Yet when Satan saw this he entered into the idol of gold, and talked to the servant, like his master's father that was dead; and said to him, " Thou doest well thus."

17Depois disso, um ladrão assaltou de surpresa a casa do jovem, filho do homem que havia morrido; então ele veio chorando à sepultura do pai e disse: ‘Ó meu pai, levaram todos os meus bens.’

17After this a thief took by surprise the house of the youth, son of the man who was dead; who then came to his father's grave, weeping, and he said, "O my father, they have carried away all my goods."

18Então Satanás lhe respondeu de dentro do ídolo: ‘Não fiques aqui; vai buscar teu filho e oferece-o a mim em oblação, e então te devolverei todos os teus bens.’

18Then Satan answered him from within the idol, and said, "Do not stay here, but go and bring thy son, and offer him up in oblation to me, and then I will return to thee all thy goods."

19Então o jovem foi e fez com seu filho conforme Satanás lhe ordenara; naquele momento Satanás entrou nele e lhe ensinou a praticar encantamentos, magia, mistura de drogas e adivinhação.

19Then that youth went, and did with his son, as Satan had commanded him, and at that time Satan entered into him, and taught him to practise enchantments, and magic, the mixture of drugs, and divination.

20Foi este o primeiro exemplo perverso em que homens imolaram os próprios filhos aos demônios e aos ídolos abomináveis.

20That was the first evil example of the kind set to men, to take their children and to offer them up in oblation to idols and to devils.
