1Entrementes, Sem e seus irmãos multiplicaram-se grandemente sobre a terra, gerando filhos e filhas; e viveu Sem quinhentos e cinquenta anos, vindo a falecer.

1Yet Shem and his brothers, multiplied abundantly upon the earth; and begat sons and daughters; and went on this way, until Shem was 550 years old, when he died.

2Embalsamaram-no e prantearam a sua perda durante quarenta dias.

2Then they embalmed him, and continued mourning for him 40 days.

3Depois dele, Arfaxade, filho de Sem, viveu quatrocentos e oitenta e cinco anos e expirou, sendo embalsamado e pranteado quarenta dias.

3After this, Arphaxad, son of Shem, lived 485 years, and then died; and they embalmed him and mourned for him 40 days.

4Sucedeu-lhe Cainã, filho de Arfaxade e pai de Melquisedeque, o qual viveu quinhentos e oitenta e nove anos e morreu.

4Then after him was Cainan, son of Arphaxad and father of Melchizedec, who lived 589 years, and then died.

5Depois dele, Salá, filho de Cainã e irmão de Melquisedeque, viveu quatrocentos e oito anos e descansou.

5After him Saleh, son of Cainan, and brother of Melchizedec lived 408 years, and then died.

6A seguir, Éber seu filho viveu quatrocentos e trinta e quatro anos e faleceu; a esposa de Éber chamava-se Azurade, filha de Ninrode.

6After him Eber his son, lived 434 years, and then died. Eber wifes was Azurad, Nimrod's daughter

7Nasceu então Pelegue quando seu pai contava duzentos e sete anos de idade.

7Then Phalek (Peleg) was born when his father was 207 years old.

8Nos dias de Pelegue a terra foi repartida pela segunda vez entre os descendentes dos três filhos de Noé: Sem, Cão e Jafé.

8In the days of Phalek, the earth was divided a second time among the three sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japhet.

9Por isso se afligiram muito com essa separação entre si, pois durante a vida de seu pai permaneciam reunidos.

9Wherefore were they much aggrieved through this division among themselves; because duriug their father's life-time, they were gathered together.

10Com a dispersão sobrevieram-lhes muitas divisões e amarguras.

10Yet now they were divided asunder, and much affliction befell them on that account.

11Morreu Pelegue e sepultaram-no na cidade que levara o seu nome.

11Yet Phalek died, and they buried him in his own city Phalek.

12Pois haviam fundado uma povoação dando-lhe o seu nome.

12For they had built a city, and had called it after his name.

13Após a sua morte, aos quatrocentos e trinta anos, irromperam grandes discórdias e os homens abrigaram-se em cidades fortificadas.

13Yet after his death, which happened when he was 430 years old, there were great disturbances, and men gathered together within fenced cities.

14Foi então que se operou a divisão dos idiomas em setenta e duas línguas;

14And after this, tongues were divided; (there are 72)

15pois Deus as confundiu quando os homens edificavam a soberba torre de Babel em Sinear, sendo a obra arruinada; Ninrode supria os artífices com a caça.

15for God divided them when men built the tower in Sennaar; yet it was destroyed over them. Nimrod provided them with food from his hunt

16Confundiu o Senhor as suas falas e dispersou o restante dos povos sobre a face da terra, por terem construído com arrogância e sem discernimento.

16And God divided their languages; and what remained of them He dispersed over the earth; because they built without a fixed plan.

17Espalhou-os o Altíssimo em razão da desordem das linguagens, de modo que falando um, ninguém compreendia o que o outro dizia.

17Therefore God dispersed them and scattered them, and brought upon them the division of their languages; until if one of them spake, no other understood what he said.

18O número dessas línguas foi de setenta e duas.

18And the number of languages is seventy-two.

19Ficaram sujeitos a setenta e dois governantes, cabendo um monarca para cada idioma e território.

19And when they were thus divided, they had over them 72 rulers, one to every tongue, and to every country, by way of a king.

20E da semente de Jafé brotaram seis nações distintas.

20And of the seed of Japhet were six peoples.
