1E o mais admirável de tudo: embora sendo velho, embora seu corpo estivesse já relaxado, seus músculos flácidos e seus nervos fracos, ele rejuvenesceu.

1And the most admirable of all: although being old, although his body was already relaxed, his muscles flabby and his nerves weak, he was rejuvenated.

2Pelo espírito da razão e pela razão de Isaque, tornou sem efeito as muitas cabeças do instrumento de tortura.

2By the spirit of reason and the reason of Isaac, he rendered ineffective the many heads of the torture instrument.

3Ó bendita velhice e cabelos veneráveis e vida conforme a lei, que o selo fiel da morte aperfeiçoou!

3O blessed old age and venerable gray hair and life according to the law, which the faithful seal of death perfected!

4Se, então, um ancião desprezou as torturas até a morte por causa da piedade, deve-se reconhecer que a razão piedosa é soberana sobre as paixões.

4If, then, an old man despised tortures unto death for the sake of piety, it must be acknowledged that pious reason is sovereign over the passions.

5Alguns talvez digam: Nem todos são senhores de suas paixões, porque nem todos têm razão prudente.

5Some may say: Not everyone is master of their passions, because not everyone has prudent reason.

6Mas quantos tiverem cuidado pela piedade de todo o coração, somente esses são capazes de dominar as paixões da carne.

6But as many as have cared for piety with all their heart, only these are able to master the passions of the flesh.

7Crendo que, como nossos patriarcas Abraão, Isaque e Jacó, não morrem para Deus, mas vivem para Deus.

7Believing that, like our patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, they do not die to God, but live to God.

8Não há contradição, portanto, em que algumas pessoas pareçam ser dominadas por suas paixões por causa da fraqueza de sua razão.

8There is no contradiction, therefore, in that some people seem to be dominated by their passions because of the weakness of their reason.

9Pois quem, filosofando com toda a regra da filosofia, confia em Deus.

9For who, philosophizing with the whole rule of philosophy, trusts in God.

10E sabe que é bendito suportar qualquer dor por causa da virtude, não superará as paixões por causa da piedade?

10And knows that it is blessed to endure any pain for the sake of virtue, will he not overcome the passions for the sake of piety?
