1Mas agora, como a razão venceu, atribuímos corretamente a ela a capacidade de governar.

1But now, since reason has conquered, we rightly attribute to it the ability to govern.

2É justo que reconheçamos a soberania da razão quando ela prevalece mesmo sobre dores externas.

2It is right that we recognize the sovereignty of reason when it prevails even over external pains.

3Seria ridículo negar. E minha prova inclui não apenas que a razão prevalece sobre as dores, mas também que prevalece sobre os prazeres e não cede a eles.

3It would be ridiculous to deny it. And my proof includes not only that reason prevails over pains, but also that it prevails over pleasures and does not yield to them.

4A razão de nosso pai Eleazar, como um excelente timoneiro, conduziu o navio da piedade sobre o mar das paixões.

4The reason of our father Eleazar, like an excellent helmsman, steered the ship of piety over the sea of passions.

5E embora insultado pelo tirano e afogado por ondas de tormentos, de modo algum virou o leme da piedade até navegar para o porto da vitória imortal.

5And although insulted by the tyrant and drowned by waves of torments, in no way did he turn the helm of piety until he sailed into the port of immortal victory.

6Nenhuma cidade sitiada jamais resistiu a tantas máquinas de guerra como aquele homem santo resistiu.

6No besieged city ever resisted so many engines of war as that holy man resisted.

7Eleazar foi tão queimado e atormentado através de todo o seu corpo, mas permaneceu inabalável, guardando a piedade com a razão.

7Eleazar was so burned and tormented throughout his whole body, but remained unshaken, guarding piety with reason.

8Ó ancião mais afortunado que os tormentos, mais poderoso que o fogo, supremo rei sobre as paixões, Eleazar!

8O elder more fortunate than torments, more powerful than fire, supreme king over the passions, Eleazar!

9Como nosso pai Arão, armado com o incensário, atravessou o múltiplo exército de anjos e venceu a praga.

9As our father Aaron, armed with the censer, traversed the manifold host of angels and conquered the plague.

10Assim o descendente de Arão, Eleazar, consumido pelo fogo, permaneceu inamovível em sua razão.

10So the descendant of Aaron, Eleazar, consumed by fire, remained immovable in his reason.
