1Sob o prazer está aquela disposição maligna, a mais variada de todas as paixões.

1Under pleasure is that evil disposition, the most varied of all the passions.

2Na alma manifesta-se como ostentação, cobiça, ambição, rivalidade e inveja.

2In the soul it manifests itself as ostentation, covetousness, ambition, rivalry and envy.

3No corpo, como alimentação indiscriminada, gula e glutonaria em solidão.

3In the body, as indiscriminate eating, gluttony and solitary gorging.

4Assim como prazer e dor são dois crescimentos do corpo e da alma, muitas paixões destas crescem.

4Just as pleasure and pain are two growths of the body and the soul, many passions grow from these.

5A razão, o agricultor divino, poda e liga e rega e de todas as maneiras cultiva os crescimentos das disposições e das paixões.

5Reason, the divine gardener, prunes and binds and waters and in all ways cultivates the growths of dispositions and passions.

6Pois a razão é guia das virtudes, mas sobre as paixões ela é soberana.

6For reason is the guide of virtues, but over the passions it is sovereign.

7Observai primeiro que a razão se torna soberana sobre as paixões através da própria lei.

7Observe first that reason becomes sovereign over the passions through the law itself.

8Assim, se alguém é ávaro, quando age segundo a lei não mais usa injustamente do que é de outros.

8Thus, if someone is greedy, when he acts according to the law he no longer uses unjustly what belongs to others.

9E se alguém é avarento, a lei força-o a não recolher os restos da colheita nem as últimas uvas do vinhedo.

9And if someone is avaricious, the law forces him not to gather the gleanings of the harvest nor the last grapes of the vineyard.

10Em todas as outras coisas podemos reconhecer que a razão é soberana sobre as paixões.

10In all other things we can recognize that reason is sovereign over the passions.
