1Eu sou miserável duas vezes: depois de dar à luz sete filhos, sou mãe de nenhum!

1I am miserable twice over: after giving birth to seven sons, I am mother of none!

2Ó sete partos inúteis e sete períodos de gestação infrutíferos, em vão as amamentações e os cuidados miseráveis!

2O seven useless births and seven fruitless periods of gestation, in vain the nursings and the miserable cares!

3Em vão, meus filhos, suportei por vocês tantas dores de parto.

3In vain, my sons, I endured for you so many pains of childbirth.

4Ai de mim, meus filhos, alguns solteiros, outros casados em vão! Não verei seus filhos nem terei a alegria de ser chamada avó.

4Woe to me, my sons, some single, others married in vain! I will not see your children nor have the joy of being called grandmother.

5Ai, eu que tinha tantos e belos filhos, sou viúva e solitária e cheia de angústia!

5Woe, I who had so many and beautiful sons, am a widow and solitary and full of anguish!

6Nem quando eu morrer terei um filho para me sepultar.

6Nor when I die will I have a son to bury me.

7Mas com tal lamentação a santa mãe não se afligiu por nenhum deles.

7But with such lamentation the holy mother did not grieve for any of them.

8Nem os dissuadiu de morrer, nem teve pena deles quando estavam morrendo.

8Nor did she dissuade them from dying, nor was she sorry for them when they were dying.

9Pelo contrário, como se ela tivesse uma mente de diamante e estivesse gerando seus filhos para a vida imortal.

9On the contrary, as if she had a mind of diamond and were bearing her children for immortal life.

10Ela os encorajou e exortou a morrer em nome da piedade.

10She encouraged and exhorted them to die in the name of piety.
