4 Esdras 8

1Ele me respondeu e disse: O Altíssimo fez este mundo por causa de muitos, mas o mundo vindouro por causa de poucos.

1He answered me and said: The Most High made this world for the sake of many, but the world to come for the sake of few.

2Mas te contarei uma parábola, Esdras. Assim como, quando perguntares à terra, ela te dirá que dá muita argila para fazer vasos de barro, mas pouco pó para fazer ouro.

2But I will tell you a parable, Esdras. Just as, when you ask the earth, it will tell you that it gives much clay for making earthen vessels, but little dust for making gold.

3Assim também é o curso do presente mundo. Muitos foram criados, mas poucos serão salvos.

3So also is the course of the present world. Many were created, but few will be saved.

4Respondi e disse: Então bebe razão, ó minha alma, e devora conhecimento, ó meu coração.

4I answered and said: Then drink reason, O my soul, and devour knowledge, O my heart.

5Pois tu vieste ao mundo sem tua vontade, e partes contra tua vontade, pois te foi dado viver apenas um curto espaço de tempo.

5For you came into the world without your will, and you depart against your will, for you were given to live only a short space of time.

6Ó Senhor, que estava sobre nós, permite que teu servo ore diante de ti, e dá-nos semente para o coração e cultivo do entendimento.

6O Lord, who was over us, allow your servant to pray before you, and give us seed for the heart and cultivation of understanding.

7Para que dele possa vir fruto, pelo qual todo mortal que tem a semelhança de homem possa viver.

7That from it may come fruit, by which every mortal who has the likeness of man may live.

8Pois tu és o único, e nós somos uma única obra de tuas mãos, como disseste.

8For you are the only one, and we are a single work of your hands, as you have said.

9E assim como agora o corpo é formado no ventre e lhe dás membros, tua criação é preservada no fogo e na água.

9And just as now the body is formed in the womb and you give it members, your creation is preserved in fire and water.

10E por nove meses a obra de tuas mãos suporta tua criação que nela foi criada.

10And for nine months the work of your hands bears your creation that was created in it.
