4 Baruque 2

1E Jeremias correu e contou estas coisas a Baruque; e ao entrarem no templo de Deus, Jeremias rasgou as suas vestes, pôs pó na cabeça e entrou no lugar santo de Deus.

1And Jeremiah ran and told these things to Baruch; and as they went into the temple of God, Jeremiah tore his garments and put dust on his head and entered the holy place of God.

2E quando Baruque o viu com pó espalhado sobre a cabeça e as vestes rasgadas, gritou em alta voz, dizendo: Padre Jeremias, o que você está fazendo? Que pecado o povo cometeu?

2And when Baruch saw him with dust sprinkled on his head and his garments torn, he cried out in a loud voice, saying: Father Jeremiah, what are you doing? What sin has the people committed?

3(Pois sempre que o povo pecava, Jeremias espalhava pó sobre a cabeça e orava pelo povo até que seus pecados fossem perdoados.)

3(For whenever the people sinned, Jeremiah would sprinkle dust on his head and would pray for the people until their sin was forgiven.)

4Então Baruque lhe perguntou, dizendo: Pai, o que é isso?

4So Baruch asked him, saying: Father, what is this?

5E Jeremias lhe disse: Abstenha-te de rasgar as tuas vestes; antes, rasguemos os nossos corações! E não tiremos água para o bebedouro, mas choremos e enchamo-los de lágrimas! Porque o Senhor não terá misericórdia deste povo.

5And Jeremiah said to him: Refrain from rending your garments -- rather, let us rend our hearts! And let us not draw water for the trough, but let us weep and fill them with tears! For the Lord will not have mercy on this people.

6E Baruque disse: Padre Jeremias, o que aconteceu?

6And Baruch said: Father Jeremiah, what has happened?

7E Jeremias disse: Deus entrega a cidade nas mãos do rei dos caldeus, para levar o povo cativo para a Babilônia.

7And Jeremiah said: God is delivering the city into the hands of the king of the Chaldeans, to take the people captive into Babylon.

8E quando Baruque ouviu estas coisas, também rasgou as suas vestes e disse: Padre Jeremias, quem te fez saber isto?

8And when Baruch heard these things, he also tore his garments and said: Father Jeremiah, who has made this known to you?

9E Jeremias lhe disse: Fica comigo um pouco, até a hora sexta da noite, para que saibas que esta palavra é verdadeira.

9And Jeremiah said to him: Stay with me awhile, until the sixth hour of the night, so that you may know that this word is true.

10Portanto, ambos permaneceram chorando na área do altar e suas vestes foram rasgadas.

10Therefore they both remained in the altar-area weeping, and their garments were torn.
