1Então Eleazar, um ancião famoso, natural das regiões interiores, cujo caráter era ornado de todos os dons divinos, aquietou os que estavam à sua volta.

1Then Eleazar, a famous elder, native of the interior regions, whose character was adorned with all divine gifts, quieted those around him.

2Rogou-lhes que parassem de clamar ao santo Deus em oração.

2He begged them to stop crying out to the holy God in prayer.

3Assim rezou: Rei onipotente, altíssimo Deus Todo-Poderoso, que governas toda a criação com misericórdia!

3He prayed thus: Almighty King, Most High God Almighty, who governs all creation with mercy!

4Olha para a descendência de Abraão, para os filhos de Jacó, que santificaste, povo de tua herança, injustamente destruído em terra estrangeira.

4Look upon the descendants of Abraham, upon the children of Jacob, whom you sanctified, the people of your inheritance, unjustly destroyed in a foreign land.

5Tu, ó Pai, destruíste Faraó com seus carros e numeroso exército, iluminando este mesmo povo quando peregrinou.

5You, O Father, destroyed Pharaoh with his chariots and numerous army, illuminating this same people when they wandered.

6Quando Senaquerib com sua hoste inumerável se vangloriou cruelmente, tu quebraste seu poder.

6When Sennacherib with his innumerable host boasted cruelly, you broke his power.

7Os três companheiros na Babilônia que expunham suas vidas às chamas foram salvos por ti.

7The three companions in Babylon who exposed their lives to the flames were saved by you.

8Daniel, caluniado e jogado aos leões famintos, foi resgatado são e salvo.

8Daniel, slandered and thrown to the hungry lions, was rescued safe and sound.

9Jonas, consumido nas entranhas do peixe, mostraste-o incólume a todos os seus familiares.

9Jonah, consumed in the entrails of the fish, you showed unharmed to all his family.

10Agora, ó Pai que aborreces a arrogância, tem piedade de nós que somos ultrajados por ímpios sem lei.

10Now, O Father who abhors arrogance, have mercy on us who are outraged by lawless impious ones.

11Que os pagãos vejam hoje que não nos abandonaste, ó Deus de Israel.

11Let the pagans see today that you have not abandoned us, O God of Israel.

12Mesmo oprimidos em terra estrangeira, não cedemos à tentação de abandonar-te.

12Even oppressed in a foreign land, we did not yield to the temptation to abandon you.

13Tem piedade de nós, Senhor criador de todas as coisas, e manifesta tua misericórdia agora!

13Have mercy on us, Lord creator of all things, and manifest your mercy now!

14Enquanto Eleazar acabava de rezar, o rei chegou ao hipódromo com as feras e toda a sua pompa militar.

14While Eleazar was finishing his prayer, the king arrived at the hippodrome with the beasts and all his military pomp.

15Os judeus, ao vê-lo, clamaram ao céu, de modo que os vales vizinhos ecoavam o grito.

15The Jews, seeing him, cried out to heaven, so that the neighboring valleys echoed the cry.

16O rei deteve os elefantes, indeciso sobre o que deveria fazer.

16The king halted the elephants, undecided about what he should do.

17Dois anjos gloriosos apareceram visivelmente do céu, aterrorizando as hostes que cercavam os judeus.

17Two glorious angels appeared visibly from heaven, terrifying the hosts surrounding the Jews.

18Fraquejou-lhe o ânimo e tremeram seus membros.

18His courage failed him and his limbs trembled.

19Os elefantes se viraram contra as tropas armadas que os seguiam, esmagando-as e destruindo-as.

19The elephants turned against the armed troops that followed them, crushing and destroying them.

20A cólera do rei transformou-se em compaixão e ele chorou por causa do que tinha tramado.

20The king's wrath was transformed into compassion and he wept because of what he had plotted.

21Ao ouvir o clamor dos judeus e vê-los prostrados, ficou cheio de ira contra seus conselheiros.

21Upon hearing the cry of the Jews and seeing them prostrate, he was filled with anger against his counselors.

22Ordenou que os judeus fossem imediatamente libertos e recebessem todos os favores necessários.

22He ordered that the Jews be immediately freed and receive all necessary favors.

23Reconheceu publicamente que o Deus de Israel os havia protegido.

23He publicly acknowledged that the God of Israel had protected them.

24O rei escreveu uma carta aos governadores das províncias em favor dos judeus.

24The king wrote a letter to the governors of the provinces in favor of the Jews.

25A rainha Berenice também interveio em favor deles, e os males foram afastados.
