1Quando chegaram ao lugar chamado Esquédia, perto de Alexandria, o rei marcou para os quarenta dias seguintes.

1When they arrived at the place called Schedia, near Alexandria, the king scheduled the following forty days.

2O prazo era para que os escribas contassem todos os judeus presentes, desde os mais idosos até as crianças de peito.

2The deadline was for the scribes to count all the Jews present, from the oldest to the nursing infants.

3Eles seriam conduzidos a Esquédia e lá seriam esmagados sob os pés de elefantes.

3They would be taken to Schedia and there would be crushed under the feet of elephants.

4Quando a notícia chegou ao rei de que os judeus de outros pontos da cidade ainda estavam saindo em segredo.

4When word reached the king that the Jews from other parts of the city were still leaving in secret.

5Partiam durante a noite para lamentar a sina miserável de seus irmãos condenados.

5They were departing during the night to lament the miserable fate of their condemned brothers.

6Ordenou então que todos fossem tratados da mesma maneira que aqueles.

6He then ordered that all be treated in the same manner as those.

7Que fossem registrados e conduzidos a Esquédia, para que todos fossem executados em um único dia.

7That they be registered and led to Schedia, so that all might be executed on a single day.

8O registro prosseguiu com toda pressa e zelo amargo, do nascer ao pôr do sol.

8The registration proceeded with all haste and bitter zeal, from sunrise to sunset.

9De quarenta dias, ainda restavam treze quando o papiro e as penas acabaram.

9Of forty days, still thirteen remained when the papyrus and pens ran out.

10A ordem do registro havia sido dada pelo rei para que num só dia pudessem destruí-los.

10The order for registration had been given by the king so that in one day they could destroy them.

11Deus Todo-Poderoso, porém, interferiu e mudou o coração do rei.

11God Almighty, however, intervened and changed the heart of the king.

12Quando Hermon veio para preparar os elefantes, entrou inesperadamente um sono profundo no rei.

12When Hermon came to prepare the elephants, a deep sleep unexpectedly came upon the king.

13Pela providência de Deus, que governa todas as coisas, esse sono deteve o plano destruidor.

13By the providence of God, who governs all things, this sleep detained the destructive plan.

14As mulheres, que imploravam, continuavam em prantos, junto com os homens e as crianças.

14The women, who implored, continued in tears, together with the men and children.

15Mas os elefantes ficaram inutilizados, pois dormiram também.

15But the elephants became useless, for they also fell asleep.

16O terrível destino, preparado contra todo o povo, foi assim frustrado mais uma vez.

16The terrible fate, prepared against all the people, was thus frustrated once again.

17Na noite seguinte, o rei não conseguiu adormecer.

17The following night, the king could not fall asleep.

18Pela manhã chamou Hermon e ordenou que os elefantes fossem preparados.

18In the morning he called Hermon and ordered that the elephants be prepared.

19Hermon preparou cinco elefantes enormes e embebedou-os com vinho puro e muito incenso.

19Hermon prepared five huge elephants and got them drunk with pure wine and much incense.

20Fez isso de manhã cedo, pretendendo soltá-los contra os judeus.

20He did this early in the morning, intending to release them against the Jews.

21Mas, o Senhor mais uma vez enviou sono àqueles que tramavam contra os justos.

21But the Lord once again sent sleep upon those who plotted against the righteous.

22O próprio rei foi acometido por um esquecimento profundo.

22The king himself was seized by a deep forgetfulness.

23Assim, nem reis nem elefantes puderam executar o que haviam planejado.

23Thus, neither kings nor elephants could execute what they had planned.

24Hermon, porém, que nunca desistia, preparou tudo novamente.

24Hermon, however, who never gave up, prepared everything again.

25Pensou: Desta vez não haverá falha.

25He thought: This time there will be no failure.

26Ordenou que os elefantes fossem preparados ao entardecer.

26He ordered that the elephants be prepared at dusk.

27O rei, despertando, tomou posição junto aos portões do hipódromo.

27The king, awakening, took position at the gates of the hippodrome.
