1Ele não se contentou com suas inúmeras licenciosidades, mas levou sua audácia ao ponto de proferir palavras injuriosas contra os judeus daquela região.

1He was not content with his innumerable licentiousness, but carried his audacity to the point of uttering injurious words against the Jews of that region.

2Seus amigos, alimentando nele esse ódio, erigiu uma estela junto à torre do palácio.

2His friends, feeding this hatred in him, he erected a stele next to the palace tower.

3Ordenou que nela se inscrevesse o seguinte:

3He ordered that on it be inscribed the following:

4Ninguém que não faça sacrifícios poderá entrar em seus templos; todos os judeus devem ser registrados entre os plebeus e reduzidos à condição de escravos.

4No one who does not offer sacrifices may enter their temples; all Jews must be registered among the common people and reduced to the condition of slaves.

5Os que se opuserem serão presos à força e mortos.

5Those who oppose will be arrested by force and killed.

6Os registrados serão também marcados a ferro no corpo com o símbolo de Dionísio, uma folha de hera, e serão reconduzidos à sua anterior condição limitada.

6Those registered will also be branded with a hot iron on the body with the symbol of Dionysus, an ivy leaf, and will be brought back to their former limited condition.

7Para não parecer que ele era inimigo de todos, acrescentou: Se alguns deles optarem por viver segundo os ritos dos iniciados, terão direitos iguais aos dos alexandrinos.

7So as not to appear that he was an enemy of all, he added: If some of them choose to live according to the rites of the initiates, they will have equal rights with the Alexandrians.

8Alguns prontamente renunciaram às práticas ancestrais, aceitando ser marcados.

8Some promptly renounced their ancestral practices, accepting to be branded.

9A maioria, porém, com nobre coragem, recusou-se a abandonar a religião por medo da morte.

9The majority, however, with noble courage, refused to abandon their religion for fear of death.

10Esperavam confiantes que obteriam ajuda e desprezavam aqueles que os abandonavam.

10They hoped confidently that they would obtain help and despised those who abandoned them.

11Consideravam-nos inimigos de sua nação e os privavam de todo trato e serviço social.

11They considered them enemies of their nation and deprived them of all social dealing and service.

12Quando o rei ímpio ouviu falar disso, ficou tão furioso que sua ira não se dirigiu somente para os que moravam em Alexandria.

12When the impious king heard of this, he became so furious that his anger was directed not only toward those who lived in Alexandria.

13Ficou mais hostil ainda contra os que moravam no campo e ordenou que todos fossem reunidos e mortos da maneira mais cruel.

13He became even more hostile toward those who lived in the countryside and ordered that all be gathered and killed in the most cruel manner.

14Enquanto se preparavam essas medidas, espalhou-se entre os pagãos o rumor de que os judeus planejavam desertar.

14While these measures were being prepared, a rumor spread among the pagans that the Jews were planning to desert.

15Isso lhes pareceu pretexto para tratá-los com hostilidade.

15This seemed to them a pretext to treat them with hostility.

16Os judeus, por sua vez, continuavam mantendo boa vontade para com os governantes.

16The Jews, for their part, continued to maintain good will toward the rulers.

17Por causa de sua piedade para com Deus e da observância de sua lei, afastavam-se da alimentação comum.

17Because of their piety toward God and their observance of his law, they abstained from common food.

18Essa atitude desagradava a alguns.

18This attitude displeased some.

19Sua conduta justa, porém, era notoriamente louvável a todos.

19Their righteous conduct, however, was notoriously praiseworthy to all.

20Os pagãos, portanto, espalham calúnias por toda a cidade.

20The pagans, therefore, spread slanders throughout the city.

21Acusavam-nos de conspirar contra o bem-estar do rei.

21They accused them of conspiring against the welfare of the king.

22Essa calúnia não era fundamentada em nada.

22This slander was not founded on anything.

23Os judeus, por sua vez, haviam mantido inabalável a fidelidade e eram favoráveis ao rei.

23The Jews, for their part, had maintained unwavering fidelity and were favorable to the king.
