1Quando Filópator soube pelos desertores que as posições por ele ocupadas haviam sido tomadas por Antíoco, deu ordens a todas as suas tropas, de infantaria e cavalaria.

1When Philopator learned from deserters that the positions he had occupied had been taken by Antiochus, he gave orders to all his troops, infantry and cavalry.

2Levou consigo sua irmã Arsínoe e marchou para a região de Ráfia, onde estava acampado o exército de Antíoco.

2He took with him his sister Arsinoe and marched to the region of Raphia, where the army of Antiochus was encamped.

3Teodoto, porém, arquitetou um atentado contra a vida de Ptolomeu, escolhendo os melhores soldados ptolomaicos que lhe haviam sido confiados.

3Theodotus, however, plotted an attempt on the life of Ptolemy, choosing the best Ptolemaic soldiers who had been entrusted to him.

4À noite, penetrou na tenda de Ptolomeu para matá-lo sozinho e assim pôr fim à guerra.

4At night, he penetrated into Ptolemy's tent to kill him alone and thus put an end to the war.

5Andreas, porém, um dos amigos do rei, desviou a espada, enquanto Dositeu, um judeu que mais tarde abandonou a lei, tirou o rei do perigo.

5Andreas, however, one of the king's friends, deflected the sword, while Dositheus, a Jew who later abandoned the law, removed the king from danger.

6Arsínoe, cercada de suas criadas, percorreu as fileiras chorando e suplicando aos soldados que combatessem virilmente por si mesmos, pelos filhos e pelas mulheres.

6Arsinoe, surrounded by her handmaids, went through the ranks weeping and pleading with the soldiers to fight manfully for themselves, their children and their wives.

7Prometeu dar-lhes, caso vencessem, duas minas de ouro por cabeça.

7She promised to give them, if they won, two minas of gold per head.

8Os adversários foram assim destruídos em combate corpo a corpo e muitos foram capturados.

8The adversaries were thus destroyed in hand-to-hand combat and many were captured.

9Dominado o atentado, o rei decidiu visitar as cidades vizinhas e encorajá-las.

9Having overcome the plot, the king decided to visit the neighboring cities and encourage them.

10Fazendo isto e distribuindo dons aos templos, fortaleceu o ânimo de seus súditos.

10Doing this and distributing gifts to the temples, he strengthened the spirit of his subjects.

11Os judeus lhe enviaram ancião do conselho e dos sacerdotes, portando presentes e congratulando-o pela vitória.

11The Jews sent him elders of the council and priests, bearing gifts and congratulating him on his victory.

12Isso despertou nele vivo desejo de visitar Jerusalém o mais depressa possível.

12This awakened in him a keen desire to visit Jerusalem as quickly as possible.

13Ali chegando, ofereceu sacrifícios de ação de graças ao Deus supremo, fazendo outras ofertas em conformidade com o santo lugar.

13Arriving there, he offered sacrifices of thanksgiving to the supreme God, making other offerings in conformity with the holy place.

14Quando chegou ao local, ficou impressionado com a beleza e a grandeza do templo.

14When he came to the place, he was impressed by the beauty and grandeur of the temple.

15Ficou maravilhado com a ordem bem regulada do serviço do santuário, e concebeu o desejo de penetrar no Santo dos Santos.

15He was amazed at the well-regulated order of the service of the sanctuary, and conceived the desire to enter the Holy of Holies.

16Explicaram-lhe que isso não era permitido, pois nem os membros do povo podiam entrar ali, nem mesmo todos os sacerdotes, mas somente o sumo sacerdote, uma vez por ano.

16They explained to him that this was not permitted, for not even members of the people could enter there, nor even all the priests, but only the high priest, once a year.

17Ele, porém, de modo algum se deixou persuadir.

17He, however, was by no means persuaded.

18Mesmo depois que lhe leram a lei, não desistiu de sua pretensão.

18Even after the law was read to him, he did not desist from his pretension.

19Afirmou que ele devia entrar, dizendo: Mesmo que eles tenham sido privados dessa honra, eu não devo ser.

19He declared that he must enter, saying: Even if they have been deprived of this honor, I should not be.

20Perguntou por que ninguém o impediu quando ele entrou em todos os templos.

20He asked why no one had stopped him when he entered all the temples.

21Alguém disse impensadamente que estava errado em se gabar disso.

21Someone said thoughtlessly that it was wrong for him to boast of this.

22Mas já que isso aconteceu, disse ele, por que não devo entrar de qualquer maneira, quer eles queiram ou não?

22But since this has happened, he said, why should I not enter anyway, whether they want it or not?

23Os sacerdotes se prostraram com suas vestes sagradas e imploraram ao Deus supremo que os ajudasse nessa crise.

23The priests prostrated themselves in their sacred vestments and implored the supreme God to help them in this crisis.

24Os clamores e as lágrimas encheram o templo, pois aqueles que haviam permanecido na cidade correram perturbados.

24The cries and tears filled the temple, for those who had remained in the city ran disturbed.

25As virgens que ficavam reclusas em suas casas correram com suas mães para as ruas.

25The virgins who stayed secluded in their houses ran with their mothers into the streets.

26As noivas recém-casadas abandonaram os tálamos nupciais.

26The newly wed brides abandoned their bridal chambers.

27Cobrindo-se de poeira e cinzas, encheram as ruas da cidade com gemidos e lamentações.

27Covering themselves with dust and ashes, they filled the streets of the city with groans and lamentations.

28Os judeus acompanhavam grupos de seus concidadãos até o templo na esperança de defender o santo lugar.

28The Jews accompanied groups of their fellow citizens to the temple hoping to defend the holy place.

29Gritavam pedindo que armas fossem distribuídas, lutando corajosamente pelo santuário de seus pais.

29They shouted asking that weapons be distributed, fighting courageously for the sanctuary of their fathers.

30Com dificuldade os anciãos conseguiram deter as multidões e fazê-las permanecer em oração.

30With difficulty the elders managed to restrain the multitudes and make them remain in prayer.
