1 Macabeus 4

1Tomando consigo cinco mil soldados de infantaria e mil cavaleiros de elite, Górgias se pôs a caminho, à noite,

1Then took Gorgias five thousand footmen, and a thousand of the best horsemen, and removed out of the camp by night;

2para surpreender o acampamento dos judeus e atacá-lo de improviso. A gente da fortaleza servia-lhe de guia.*

2To the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews, and smite them suddenly. And the men of the fortress were his guides.

3Mas Judas o soube e com seus destemidos companheiros saiu para esmagar aquelas forças do rei que tinham ficado perto de Emaús,

3Now when Judas heard thereof he himself removed, and the valiant men with him, that he might smite the king’s army which was at Emmaus,

4enquanto as tropas estavam espalhadas na planície.

4While as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp.

5Chegou Górgias à noite ao acampamento de Judas, mas não encontrou ninguém. Pôs-se então à sua procura nas montanhas, dizendo: “Fugiram diante de nós”.

5In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas: and when he found no man there, he sought them in the mountains: for said he, These fellows flee from us

6Todavia, Judas apareceu na planície ao despertar do dia com três mil homens que, excetuando espadas e escudos, não estavam armados como o teriam querido.

6But as soon as it was day, Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men, who nevertheless had neither armour nor swords to their minds.

7Entrementes viram eles o campo dos gentios, poderoso, fortificado de cavalaria e os próprios inimigos prontos para o combate.

7And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well harnessed, and compassed round about with horsemen; and these were expert of war.

8“Não temais seu grande número – disse Judas a seus companheiros – e não temais seu choque.

8Then said Judas to the men that were with him, Fear ye not their multitude, neither be ye afraid of their assault.

9Lembrai-vos como nossos pais foram salvos no mar Vermelho, quando o faraó os perseguia com seu exército.

9Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.

10Gritemos agora para o céu para que ele se apiede de nós, que se lembre da Aliança com nossos antepassados e queira hoje esmagar esse exército aos nossos olhos.

10Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us, and remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this host before our face this day:

11Todas as nações saberão que Israel possui um libertador e um salvador.”

11That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel.

12Erguendo os olhos, os gentios viram-nos avançar contra eles,

12Then the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming over against them.

13e saíram do acampamento para a luta, enquanto os homens de Judas soavam as trombetas.

13Wherefore they went out of the camp to battle; but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets.

14Travou-se a batalha, mas os inimigos, derrotados, puseram-se em fuga através da planície.

14So they joined battle, and the heathen being discomfited fled into the plain.

15Os últimos tombaram todos sob a espada, enquanto eram perseguidos até Gazara e as planícies de Idumeia, de Azoto e de Jâmnia. E sucumbiram cerca de três mil homens.

15Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword: for they pursued them unto Gazera, and unto the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, so that there were slain of them upon a three thousand men.

16Então, Judas parou de persegui-los, voltou atrás com suas tropas pelo mesmo caminho,

16This done, Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them,

17e disse: “Não penseis nos despojos, porque outro combate nos aguarda.

17And said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoil inasmuch as there is a battle before us,

18Górgias está perto de nós nas montanhas, com suas forças. No momento, enfrentai os inimigos e combatei. Depois, podereis apoderar-vos de seus despojos, com toda tranquilidade”.

18And Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain: but stand ye now against our enemies, and overcome them, and after this ye may boldly take the spoils.

19Ainda Judas falava, quando alguns homens apareceram e olharam do alto da montanha.

19As Judas was yet speaking these words, there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain:

20Viram que o exército tinha sido posto em fuga e que o acampamento se queimava porque a fumaça que se percebia indicava o que tinha acontecido.

20Who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight and were burning the tents; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done:

21À vista disso, todos foram tomados de grande espanto e, certificando-se de que o exército de Judas se achava na planície, pronto para o combate,

21When therefore they perceived these things, they were sore afraid, and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight,

22fugiram todos para a terra estrangeira.

22They fled every one into the land of strangers.

23Judas voltou para saquear o acampamento, e seus homens apoderaram-se de muito ouro, prata, jacinto, púrpura marinha e grandes riquezas.

23Then Judas returned to spoil the tents, where they got much gold, and silver, and blue silk, and purple of the sea, and great riches.

24Ao voltarem, cantavam hinos e elevavam ao céu os louvores ao Senhor, exclamando: “Ele é bom e sua misericórdia é eterna”.

24After this they went home, and sung a song of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord in heaven: because it is good, because his mercy endureth forever.

25Naquele dia foi grande a vitória que se alcançou em Israel.

25Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.

26Os gentios que escaparam vieram contar a Lísias o acontecido.

26Now all the strangers that had escaped came and told Lysias what had happened:

27Ele ficou consternado e abatido ouvindo-os, porque Israel não tinha sido tratado como ele quis, e porque as ordens do rei não tinham sido cumpridas.

27Who, when he heard thereof, was confounded and discouraged, because neither such things as he would were done unto Israel, nor such things as the king commanded him were come to pass.

28Por isso, no ano seguinte, reuniu Lísias sessenta mil infantes escolhidos e cinco mil cavaleiros para lutar contra os judeus.

28The next year therefore following Lysias gathered together threescore thousand choice men of foot, and five thousand horsemen, that he might subdue them.

29Esse exército veio da Idumeia acampar em Betsur. Judas foi-lhe ao encontro com dez mil homens.*

29So they came into Idumea, and pitched their tents at Bethsura, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.

30Tendo ante os olhos esse poderoso exército, rezou nestes termos: “Sede bendito, Salvador de Israel, vós que quebras­tes a força do gigante pela mão do vosso servo Davi e entregastes os exércitos estrangeiros às mãos de Jônatas e do seu escudeiro.

30And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armourbearer;

31Entregai esse exército ao poder do povo de Israel e confundi nossos inimigos com suas tropas e sua cavalaria.

31Shut up this army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and horsemen:

32Inspirai-lhes o terror, fazei derreter seu orgulho audaz. Que eles sejam sacudidos e pisados.

32Make them to be of no courage, and cause the boldness of their strength to fall away, and let them quake at their destruction:

33Derrubai-os pela espada dos que vos amam e que todos aqueles que conhecem vosso nome cantem vossos louvores”.

33Cast them down with the sword of them that love thee, and let all those that know thy name praise thee with thanksgiving.

34Travou-se então o combate, e do exér­cito de Lísias tombaram cinco mil homens, que sucumbiram diante deles.

34So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain.

35Vendo seu exército posto em fuga e os judeus cheios de bravura, prontos a viver ou a morrer valentemente, voltou Lísias a Antioquia para arregimentar tropas de mercenários, com o intuito de reaparecer na Judeia com um exército mais forte.

35Now when Lysias saw his army put to flight, and the manliness of Judas’ soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into Judea.

36Judas e seus irmãos disseram então: “Eis que nossos inimigos estão aniquilados. Subamos agora para purificar e consagrar de novo os lugares santos”.

36Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary.

37Reunido todo o exército, subiram ao monte Sião.

37Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion.

38Contemplaram a desolação dos lugares santos, o altar profanado, as portas queimadas, os átrios cheios de arbustos que tinham nascido como num bosque ou sobre as colinas, os aposentos demolidos.

38And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests’ chambers pulled down;

39Rasgando suas vestes, eles se lamentaram muito e cobriram as cabeças com cinza.

39They rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads,

40Prostraram-se com o rosto por terra, tocaram as trombetas e ergueram clamores ao céu.

40And fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven.

41Então, Judas encarregou alguns homens para combater os soldados da fortaleza, enquanto purificavam o templo.*

41Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary.

42Escolheu sacerdotes sem mancha e zelosos da Lei,

42So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law:

43os quais purificaram o templo, transportando para lugar impuro as pedras contaminadas.

43Who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place.

44Consultaram-se entre si, o que se deveria fazer com o altar dos holocaustos, que havia sido profanado.

44And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned;

45Tomaram a excelente ideia de demoli-lo, para que não recaísse sobre eles o opróbrio vindo da mancha dos gentios. Destruíram-no, portanto,

45They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down,

46e transportaram suas pedras a um lugar conveniente sobre a montanha do templo, aguardando a decisão de algum profeta a esse respeito.

46And laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them.

47Tomaram pedras não-talhadas, segundo a Lei, e construíram um novo altar, semelhante ao primeiro.

47Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former;

48Restauraram o santuário, assim como o interior do templo, e purificaram os átrios.

48And made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts.

49Fizeram novos vasos sagrados e transportaram ao santuá­rio o candelabro, o altar dos perfumes e a mesa.

49They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of burnt offerings, and of incense, and the table.

50Queimaram incenso sobre o altar e acenderam as lâmpadas do candelabro, que voltaram a brilhar no interior do templo.

50And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple.

51Colocaram pães sobre a mesa e suspenderam os véus, terminando completamente seu trabalho.

51Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make.

52No dia vinte e cinco do nono mês, isto é, do mês de Casleu, do ano cento e quarenta e oito, eles se levantaram muito cedo

52Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning,

53e ofereceram um sacrifício conforme a Lei, sobre o novo altar dos holocaustos, que haviam construído.

53And offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made.

54Foi no mesmo dia e na mesma data em que os gentios o haviam profanado, que o altar foi de novo consagrado ao som de cânticos, das harpas, das liras e dos címbalos.

54Look, at what time and what day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals.

55Todo o povo se prostrou com o rosto em terra para adorar e bendizer ao céu aquele que os havia conduzido ao triunfo.

55Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success.

56Prolongaram por oito dias a dedicação do altar, oferecendo com alegria holocaustos e sacrifícios de ação de graças e de louvor.*

56And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise.

57Adornaram a fachada do templo com coroas de ouro e pequenos escudos. Consagraram as entradas do templo e os quartos, nos quais colocaram portas.

57They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold, and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them.

58Reinou uma alegria imensa entre o povo e o opróbrio das nações foi afastado.

58Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away.

59Foi estabelecido por Judas e seus irmãos, e por toda a assembleia de Israel que os dias da dedicação do altar seriam celebrados cada ano em sua data própria, durante oito dias, a partir do dia vinte e cinco do mês de Casleu, e isto com alegria e regozijo.

59Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness.

60Na mesma época, cercaram o monte Sião com uma alta muralha com fortes torres, para que não fosse mais possível às nações pisá-la aos pés, como outrora.

60At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down as they had done before.

61Judas pôs ali tropas para guardá-la e fortificou também Betsur para protegê-la, a fim de que o povo tivesse uma muralha na direção da Idumeia.

61And they set there a garrison to keep it, and fortified Bethsura to preserve it; that the people might have a defence against Idumea.
