1 Macabeus 10

1No ano cento e sessenta, Alexandre Epífanes, filho de Antíoco, embarcou e veio ocupar Ptolemaida, onde foi acolhido e proclamado rei.*

1In the hundred and sixtieth year Alexander, the son of Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, went up and took Ptolemais: for the people had received him, by means whereof he reigned there,

2Soube-o o rei Demétrio, que reuniu um numero­síssimo exército e o atacou.

2Now when king Demetrius heard thereof, he gathered together an exceeding great host, and went forth against him to fight.

3Enviou a Jônatas uma carta, em termos pacíficos, para lisonjeá-lo,

3Moreover Demetrius sent letters unto Jonathan with loving words, so as he magnified him.

4dizendo consigo mesmo: “Apressemo-nos em fazer a paz com ele, antes que a faça com Alexandre contra nós.

4For said he, Let us first make peace with him, before he join with Alexander against us:

5Porque certamente ele se lembra do mal que lhe causamos, assim como a seus irmãos e à sua raça”.

5Else he will remember all the evils that we have done against him, and against his brethren and his people.

6Concedeu-lhe autorização para recrutar tropas, fabricar armas e ser seu aliado. Mandou-lhe entregar os reféns aprisionados na fortaleza.

6Wherefore he gave him authority to gather together an host, and to provide weapons, that he might aid him in battle: he commanded also that the hostages that were in the tower should be delivered him.

7Jônatas veio então a Jerusalém e leu a carta diante de todo o povo e das tropas que ocupavam a fortaleza.

7Then came Jonathan to Jerusalem, and read the letters in the audience of all the people, and of them that were in the tower:

8Estes ficaram tomados de um grande medo, quando souberam que o rei lhe havia permitido levantar um exército.

8Who were sore afraid, when they heard that the king had given him authority to gather together an host.

9Os guardas lhe entregaram os reféns e ele os entregou a seus pais.

9Whereupon they of the tower delivered their hostages unto Jonathan, and he delivered them unto their parents.

10Ficou habitando em Jerusalém e começou a edificar e restaurar a cidade.

10This done, Jonathan settled himself in Jerusalem, and began to build and repair the city.

11Ordenou aos que executavam os trabalhos, que construíssem ao redor do monte Sião um muro de pedras de cantaria para sua fortificação. E assim foi feito.

11And he commanded the workmen to build the walls and the mount Sion and about with square stones for fortification; and they did so.

12Os estrangeiros que se achavam nas fortalezas edificadas por Báquides fugiram.

12Then the strangers, that were in the fortresses which Bacchides had built, fled away;

13Cada qual deixou seu posto para se refugiar no seu país.

13Insomuch as every man left his place, and went into his own country.

14Sobraram somente em Betsur alguns dos desertores da Lei e dos preceitos. Era ali seu lugar de refúgio.

14Only at Bethsura certain of those that had forsaken the law and the commandments remained still: for it was their place of refuge.

15Entretanto, soube o rei Alexandre da carta que Demétrio havia feito a Jônatas, e contaram-lhe as batalhas e feitos deste e de seus irmãos, como também os trabalhos que tinham suportado.

15Now when king Alexander had heard what promises Demetrius had sent unto Jonathan: when also it was told him of the battles and noble acts which he and his brethren had done, and of the pains that they had endured,

16“Poderíamos acaso encontrar – disse ele – um homem semelhante a este? Procuremos imediatamente fazê-lo nosso amigo e aliado.”

16He said, Shall we find such another man? now therefore we will make him our friend and confederate.

17Escreveu-lhe então e mandou-lhe uma carta lavrada nestes termos:

17Upon this he wrote a letter, and sent it unto him, according to these words, saying,

18“O rei Alexandre a seu irmão Jônatas, saudações!

18King Alexander to his brother Jonathan sendeth greeting:

19Ouvimos dizer de ti, que tu és um homem poderoso e forte, e que mereces a nossa amizade.

19We have heard of thee, that thou art a man of great power, and meet to be our friend.

20Por isso, te constituímos desde agora sumo sacerdote de teu povo e te outorgamos o título de amigo do rei – mandou-lhe uma toga de púrpura e uma coroa de ouro – e pedimos-te escolher nosso partido e conservar-nos tua amizade”.

20Wherefore now this day we ordain thee to be the high priest of thy nation, and to be called the king’s friend; (and therewithal he sent him a purple robe and a crown of gold:) and require thee to take our part, and keep friendship with us.

21No sétimo mês do ano cento e sessenta, pela festa dos Tabernáculos, revestiu-se Jônatas da túnica sagrada. Organizou um exército e ajuntou armas em quantidade.

21So in the seventh month of the hundred and sixtieth year, at the feast of the tabernacles, Jonathan put on the holy robe, and gathered together forces, and provided much armour.

22Demétrio foi informado de tudo isso e inquietou-se:

22Whereof when Demetrius heard, he was very sorry, and said,

23“Como fomos deixar que Alexandre nos precedesse, travando com os judeus uma amizade que o fortifica?

23What have we done, that Alexander hath prevented us in making amity with the Jews to strengthen himself?

24Eu também vou escrever-lhe belas palavras, títulos e presentes, para que eles passem ao meu lado e venham em meu auxílio”.

24I also will write unto them words of encouragement, and promise them dignities and gifts, that I may have their aid.

25E ele mandou-lhes levar uma mensagem nestes termos: “O rei Demétrio ao povo dos judeus, saudações!

25He sent unto them therefore to this effect: King Demetrius unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting:

26Vós observastes nossos acordos, permanecestes fiéis à nossa amizade e não fizestes convenções com nossos inimigos. Nós o sabemos e regozijamo-nos com isso.

26Whereas ye have kept covenants with us, and continued in our friendship, not joining yourselves with our enemies, we have heard hereof, and are glad.

27Ainda agora continuai a nos conservar a mesma fidelidade e vos recompensaremos do que fareis por nós.

27Wherefore now continue ye still to be faithful unto us, and we will well recompense you for the things ye do in our behalf,

28Nós vos isentaremos dos muitos impostos e vos cumula­remos de presentes.

28And will grant you many immunities, and give you rewards.

29Desde agora concedemo-vos a todos os judeus dispensa dos impostos, da taxa do sal e das coroas.*

29And now do I free you, and for your sake I release all the Jews, from tributes, and from the customs of salt, and from crown taxes,

30Ao terço dos produtos do solo e à metade dos frutos das árvores, que me pertencem, eu renuncio, a partir deste dia, a cobrar na terra de Judá e nos três distritos da Samaria e da Galileia, que lhe estão anexos. Isso desde agora e para sempre.

30And from that which appertaineth unto me to receive for the third part or the seed, and the half of the fruit of the trees, I release it from this day forth, so that they shall not be taken of the land of Judea, nor of the three governments which are added thereunto out of the country of Samaria and Galilee, from this day forth for evermore.

31Que Jerusalém seja sagrada e isenta, com seu território, dos dízimos e dos impostos.

31Let Jerusalem also be holy and free, with the borders thereof, both from tenths and tributes.

32Renuncio também a todo poder sobre a fortaleza de Jerusalém e a entrego ao sumo sacerdote, para que ele coloque ali como guardas os homens que ele quiser.

32And as for the tower which is at Jerusalem, I yield up authority over it, and give the high priest, that he may set in it such men as he shall choose to keep it.

33Concedo gratuitamente a liberdade a todo cidadão judeu, em cativeiro no meu reino e todos serão isentos de impostos, mesmo sobre seu gado.

33Moreover I freely set at liberty every one of the Jews, that were carried captives out of the land of Judea into any part of my kingdom, and I will that all my officers remit the tributes even of their cattle.

34Todos os dias solenes, os sábados, as neomênias, as festas prescritas, os três dias anteriores às solenidades e os três dias posteriores, sejam dias de imunidade e de isenção para todos os judeus que habitam em meu reino.

34Furthermore I will that all the feasts, and sabbaths, and new moons, and solemn days, and the three days before the feast, and the three days after the feast shall be all of immunity and freedom for all the Jews in my realm.

35Ninguém poderá perseguir ou molestar quem quer que seja dentre eles, por motivo algum.

35Also no man shall have authority to meddle with or to molest any of them in any matter.

36Que se alistem no exército do rei até trinta mil judeus e que lhes sejam dados os mesmos direitos que às tropas reais.

36I will further, that there be enrolled among the king’s forces about thirty thousand men of the Jews, unto whom pay shall be given, as belongeth to all king’s forces.

37Alguns deles serão colocados nas grandes fortalezas do rei, outros serão designados para postos de confiança no reino. Seus chefes e seus oficiais serão escolhidos entre eles, seguirão suas próprias leis, como o exige o rei para a Judeia.

37And of them some shall be placed in the king’s strong holds, of whom also some shall be set over the affairs of the kingdom, which are of trust: and I will that their overseers and governors be of themselves, and that they live after their own laws, even as the king hath commanded in the land of Judea.

38Os três distritos da Samaria que foram anexados à Judeia lhe serão incorporados de maneira que sejam considerados como sendo um só com ela, e não obedeçam a nenhuma outra autoridade a não ser à do sumo sacerdote.

38And concerning the three governments that are added to Judea from the country of Samaria, let them be joined with Judea, that they may be reckoned to be under one, nor bound to obey other authority than the high priest’s.

39Faço de Ptolemaida e de seu território doação ao templo de Jerusalém, para prover seu sustento.

39As for Ptolemais, and the land pertaining thereto, I give it as a free gift to the sanctuary at Jerusalem for the necessary expences of the sanctuary.

40Darei também cada ano quinze mil siclos de prata das rendas do rei, provenientes dos seus domínios.

40Moreover I give every year fifteen thousand shekels of silver out of the king’s accounts from the places appertaining.

41Todo o dinheiro que os administradores dos negócios não tiverem despendido, e que lhes sobrar, como nos anos passados, será destinado à construção do templo.

41And all the overplus, which the officers payed not in as in former time, from henceforth shall be given toward the works of the temple.

42Além disso, será feita a entrega dos cinco mil siclos de prata cobrados cada ano das rendas do templo, porque essa soma pertence aos sacerdotes que prestam o serviço litúrgico.

42And beside this, the five thousand shekels of silver, which they took from the uses of the temple out of the accounts year by year, even those things shall be released, because they appertain to the priests that minister.

43Todo aquele que se refugiar no Templo de Jerusalém ou no seu recinto, por motivo de dívida ao fisco, ou por qualquer coisa que seja, será poupado, bem como tudo o que ele possui no meu reino.

43And whosoever they be that flee unto the temple at Jerusalem, or be within the liberties hereof, being indebted unto the king, or for any other matter, let them be at liberty, and all that they have in my realm.

44As despesas para os trabalhos da construção e restauração do templo serão postas na conta do rei.

44For the building also and repairing of the works of the sanctuary expences shall be given of the king’s accounts.

45Do mesmo modo, as despesas para a construção dos muros e do recinto da cidade ficarão a cargo das rendas do rei, bem como os gastos da construção das outras fortificações na Judeia”.

45Yea, and for the building of the walls of Jerusalem, and the fortifying thereof round about, expences shall be given out of the king’s accounts, as also for the building of the walls in Judea.

46Quando Jônatas e o povo ouviram essas propostas, não acreditaram e não quiseram aceitá-las, lembrando-se de todo o mal que Demétrio havia causado a Israel e do quanto ele os havia oprimido.

46Now when Jonathan and the people heard these words, they gave no credit unto them, nor received them, because they remembered the great evil that he had done in Israel; for he had afflicted them very sore.

47Escolheram então o partido de Alexandre, porque ele tinha sido o primeiro a lhes falar de paz, e foram sempre seus auxiliares.

47But with Alexander they were well pleased, because he was the first that entreated of true peace with them, and they were confederate with him always.

48Alexandre reuniu um grande exército e veio ao encontro de Demétrio.

48Then gathered king Alexander great forces, and camped over against Demetrius.

49Os dois reis travaram combate, mas o exército de Demétrio fugiu. Perseguiu-o Alexandre, obtendo pleno êxito.

49And after the two kings had joined battle, Demetrius’ host fled: but Alexander followed after him, and prevailed against them.

50Combateu com ardor até o pôr do sol e Demétrio morreu nesse mesmo dia.

50And he continued the battle very sore until the sun went down: and that day was Demetrius slain.

51Então, Alexandre enviou embaixadores a Ptolomeu, rei do Egito, com a missão de lhe dizer:

51Afterward Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemee king of Egypt with a message to this effect:

52“Eis-me de volta ao solo do meu reino e assentado no trono de meus pais. Recobrei o poder, derrotei Demétrio e tomei posse de meu país.

52Forasmuch as I am come again to my realm, and am set in the throne of my progenitors, and have gotten the dominion, and overthrown Demetrius, and recovered our country;

53Travei batalha com ele, venci-o com seu exército e subi ao trono onde ele reinava.

53For after I had joined battle with him, both he and his host was discomfited by us, so that we sit in the throne of his kingdom:

54Façamos agora laços de amizade. Dá-me tua filha como esposa e serei teu genro, e vos cumularei, a ti e a ela, com presentes dignos de vós”.

54Now therefore let us make a league of amity together, and give me now thy daughter to wife: and I will be thy son in law, and will give both thee and her as according to thy dignity.

55O rei Ptolomeu respondeu: “Venturoso o dia em que entraste na terra de teus pais e te assentaste no trono de seu reino!

55Then Ptolemee the king gave answer, saying, Happy be the day wherein thou didst return into the land of thy fathers, and satest in the throne of their kingdom.

56Por isso, te darei o que me pedes. Mas vem ter comigo em Ptolemaida, para que nos vejamos, e farei de ti o meu genro como desejas”.

56And now will I do to thee, as thou hast written: meet me therefore at Ptolemais, that we may see one another; for I will marry my daughter to thee according to thy desire.

57Partiu Ptolomeu do Egito com sua filha Cleópatra e dirigiu-se a Ptolemaida no ano cento e sessenta e dois.

57So Ptolemee went out of Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra, and they came unto Ptolemais in the hundred threescore and second year:

58Deu-a em casamento a Alexandre que veio-lhe ao encontro e celebrou as bodas com real magnificência.

58Where king Alexander meeting him, he gave unto him his daughter Cleopatra, and celebrated her marriage at Ptolemais with great glory, as the manner of kings is.

59O rei Alexandre escreveu também a Jônatas para que viesse procurá-lo.

59Now king Alexander had written unto Jonathan, that he should come and meet him.

60Este se dirigiu a Ptolemaida, onde, com pompa, encontrou os dois reis. Ofereceu-lhes, como também a seus amigos, prata, ouro e numerosos presentes e conquistou sua total confiança.

60Who thereupon went honourably to Ptolemais, where he met the two kings, and gave them and their friends silver and gold, and many presents, and found favour in their sight.

61Todavia, alguns perversos de Israel reuniram-se contra ele e esses ímpios quiseram acusá-lo, mas o rei não lhes deu atenção.

61At that time certain pestilent fellows of Israel, men of a wicked life, assembled themselves against him, to accuse him: but the king would not hear them.

62Ordenou até mesmo que se tirassem as vestes de Jônatas, para revesti-lo de púrpura. E assim fizeram. E o rei fê-lo assentar-se junto de si.

62Yea more than that, the king commanded to take off his garments, and clothe him in purple: and they did so.

63Disse também aos grandes de sua corte: “Saí com ele para o centro da cidade e proclamai que ninguém o acuse, sob qualquer pretexto, e que ninguém o moleste de maneira alguma”.

63And he made him sit by himself, and said unto his princes, Go with him into the midst of the city, and make proclamation, that no man complain against him of any matter, and that no man trouble him for any manner of cause.

64Quando seus acusadores o viram assim exaltado publicamente e revestido de púrpura, fugiram.

64Now when his accusers saw that he was honored according to the proclamation, and clothed in purple, they fled all away.

65Honrou-o o rei, inscreveu-o entre seus primeiros amigos e deu-lhe o título de chefe do exército e de governador.

65So the king honoured him, and wrote him among his chief friends, and made him a duke, and partaker of his dominion.

66Após isso, regressou Jônatas a Jerusalém, tranquilo e alegre.

66Afterward Jonathan returned to Jerusalem with peace and gladness.

67No ano cento e sessenta e cinco, Demétrio, filho de Demétrio, voltou de Creta à terra de seus pais.*

67Furthermore in the hundred threescore and fifth year came Demetrius son of Demetrius out of Crete into the land of his fathers:

68Com essa notícia, Alexandre, muito contristado, partiu para Antioquia.

68Whereof when king Alexander heard tell, he was right sorry, and returned into Antioch.

69Demétrio constituiu Apolônio como governador da Celessíria. Este levantou um poderoso exército, que ele reuniu em Jâmnia, e mandou avisar ao sumo sacerdote Jônatas:*

69Then Demetrius made Apollonius the governor of Celosyria his general, who gathered together a great host, and camped in Jamnia, and sent unto Jonathan the high priest, saying,

70“Só tu nos resistes e, por causa de ti, eu me tornei objeto de zombarias e de opróbrio. Por que te fazes de arrogante diante de nós, em tuas montanhas?*

70Thou alone liftest up thyself against us, and I am laughed to scorn for thy sake, and reproached: and why dost thou vaunt thy power against us in the mountains?

71Se tens ainda confiança em tuas tropas, desce agora das montanhas a nós na planície, onde nos poderemos medir, porque tenho comigo a força das cidades.

71Now therefore, if thou trustest in thine own strength, come down to us into the plain field, and there let us try the matter together: for with me is the power of the cities.

72Informa-te e saberás quem sou eu e quem são os meus aliados. Estes também dizem que não podereis manter-vos de pé diante de nós, porque já duas vezes teus pais foram afugentados em sua própria terra.

72Ask and learn who I am, and the rest that take our part, and they shall tell thee that thy foot is not able to stand before our face; for thy fathers have been twice put to flight in their own land.

73Hoje não poderás mais resistir à nossa cavalaria e a um tal exército, nesta planície, onde não há nem pedra nem rochedo nem esconderijo algum para se refugiar”.

73Wherefore now thou shalt not be able to abide the horsemen and so great a power in the plain, where is neither stone nor flint, nor place to flee unto.

74Ao ouvir as palavras de Apolônio, indignou-se Jônatas. Tomando consigo dez mil homens, saiu de Jerusalém. Seu irmão Simão trouxe-lhe reforço.

74So when Jonathan heard these words of Apollonius, he was moved in his mind, and choosing ten thousand men he went out of Jerusalem, where Simon his brother met him for to help him.

75Veio acampar perto de Jope que, possuindo uma guarnição de Apolônio, fechou-lhe suas portas. Jônatas atacou-a.

75And he pitched his tents against Joppa: but; they of Joppa shut him out of the city, because Apollonius had a garrison there.

76Os habitantes, espantados, abriram-lhe as portas e assim Jônatas conquistou Jope.

76Then Jonathan laid siege unto it: whereupon they of the city let him in for fear: and so Jonathan won Joppa.

77Ao saber disso, Apolônio pôs a caminho três mil cavaleiros e um poderoso exército

77Whereof when Apollonius heard, he took three thousand horsemen, with a great host of footmen, and went to Azotus as one that journeyed, and therewithal drew him forth into the plain. because he had a great number of horsemen, in whom he put his trust.

78e de lá dirigiu-se para Azoto, como se fosse atravessá-la. Ao mesmo tempo, ganhou a planície, porque possuía uma numerosa cavalaria, na qual depositava confiança. Jônatas perseguiu-o até Azoto, e os dois exércitos chocaram-se.

78Then Jonathan followed after him to Azotus, where the armies joined battle.

79Apolônio havia deixado escondidos mil cavaleiros, para pegar os judeus de emboscada.

79Now Apollonius had left a thousand horsemen in ambush.

80Mas Jônatas foi informado dessa emboscada dirigida contra ele. Os inimigos cercavam sua formação e, desde a manhã até o pôr do sol, atacaram seus homens.

80And Jonathan knew that there was an ambushment behind him; for they had compassed in his host, and cast darts at the people, from morning till evening.

81O povo permanecia firme em suas fileiras como Jônatas havia ordenado, enquanto que os cavaleiros do inimigo se fatigavam.

81But the people stood still, as Jonathan had commanded them: and so the enemies’ horses were tired.

82Em seguida, Simão avançou com sua tropa e travou uma batalha contra a falange, quando a cavalaria já estava enfraquecida. O inimigo, aniquilado, foi posto em fuga.

82Then brought Simon forth his host, and set them against the footmen, (for the horsemen were spent) who were discomfited by him, and fled.

83Os cavaleiros se dispersaram pela planície, e os fugitivos alcançaram Azoto, onde se refugiaram no templo de Dagon, seu ídolo, para ali se porem em segurança.

83The horsemen also, being scattered in the field, fled to Azotus, and went into Bethdagon, their idol’s temple, for safety.

84Jônatas incendiou Azoto e todos os povoados das circunvizinhanças depois de tê-los pilhado. Queimou o templo de Dagon com todos os que estavam ali refugiados.

84But Jonathan set fire on Azotus, and the cities round about it, and took their spoils; and the temple of Dagon, with them that were fled into it, he burned with fire.

85O número dos que pereceram pela espada ou pelo fogo foi cerca de oito mil.

85Thus there were burned and slain with the sword well nigh eight thousand men.

86Jônatas partiu dali e foi acampar diante de Ascalon, cujos habitantes saíram-lhe ao encontro, rendendo-lhe grandes honras.

86And from thence Jonathan removed his host, and camped against Ascalon, where the men of the city came forth, and met him with great pomp.

87Em seguida, alcançou Jerusalém com seus companheiros, carregados de espólios.

87After this returned Jonathan and his host unto Jerusalem, having any spoils.

88Quando o rei Alexandre soube desses acontecimentos, quis honrar ainda mais Jônatas.

88Now when king Alexander heard these things, he honoured Jonathan yet more.

89Mandou-lhe uma fivela de ouro, como se concedia aos pais dos reis, e deu-lhe como propriedade pessoal Acaron e seu território.

89And sent him a buckle of gold, as the use is to be given to such as are of the king’s blood: he gave him also Accaron with the borders thereof in possession.
