1Consideremos o prodígio extraordinário que acontece nas regiões do Oriente, isto é, nas regiões próximas à Arábia.

1Let us consider the extraordinary wonder that happens in the regions of the East, that is, in the regions near Arabia.

2Há um pássaro chamado fênix. É o único de sua espécie e vive quinhentos anos.

2There is a bird called the phoenix. It is the only one of its kind and lives five hundred years.

3Quando se aproxima seu tempo de morte, faz para si um ninho de incenso e mirra e outras especiarias.

3When its time of death approaches, it makes for itself a nest of incense and myrrh and other spices.

4E quando seu tempo se cumpre, entra nele e morre. Mas ao se decompor a carne, nasce um verme que, nutrido pela substância do pássaro morto, cria penas e se torna uma nova fênix.

4And when its time is fulfilled, it enters into it and dies. But when its flesh decomposes, a worm is born that, nourished by the substance of the dead bird, grows feathers and becomes a new phoenix.
